I was reading a French article about this and as usual, it is just a ridiculous publicity stunt. It was valid over about a 20 day period and the participating hotels just provided one or two rooms in the scheme "as a test."

Not surprised. It is not sustainable as a business model, unlike "pay what you want" restaurants - in that case I think most people might be averse to paying a pittance.
I think that what is really needed is for the hotel industry to adapt to changing wants and needs on the part of travellers. A lot of people do want to be able to "eat in", for example, and not have to dine in restaurants three times a day, and of course many people need to be able to work on computers at least to some extent. Conversely, there may be other hotel amenities that interest them less.
