www.macleans.ca/society/the-no-baby-boom/What I find interesting is that the numbers should be "shocking". Really? With the environmental impact of humanity, unprecedented population levels and the choices available to women these days, this should be shocking? No, I don't have kids, I know plenty who do and just as many who don't. It's funny, it's not an issue to me, but it is for so many others.

Whether or not to have children should be a personal decision. Though some fools might choose to label childless individuals/couples as "unfulfilled" or lacking somehow, I see that as the problem of the people who make those judgements.

Oddly enough, there are two countries in Europe that are having a "sufficient" number of children: Ireland and France. The main point is how much working population there will be to support old age pensions for the retired population. Even though workers in most countries pay into retirement funds, they are actually paying to support the people who are already retired. It is the younger generations that will have to pay for their own retirement. If there are no children, the system collapses.

Kerouac, with modern technology, we don't have to work as many hours as even 20 years ago.
You know very well that most caregivers are imported from the Global South. This will become unsustainable, but it will take a while. We also need the choice not to "live" when we are demented and incontinent. Please kill me! (Not now, then - and gently).
There is no shortage of babies in our world. There are too many colours in my family for me to give a rat's arse what colour they are.
I find your comment a bit odd, as you haven't procreated any more than I have, unless you are hiding something (as is your right; one of the most hideous aspects of online life is delving into strangers' private lives). Indeed, the model must be revised, but taking into account greatly increased labour productivity.

I'm with you, lagatta.
The push for countries to increase their populations exponentially merely to keep the benefits rolling in is unconscionable. The planet cannot sustain that kind of growth. Someone should have thought this through better, dammit!
