Well, we (especially you) live considerably farther from Paris. No TGV under the Atlantic, or even across North America... I'm hoping to get to Paris near the end of this year, though it is far from certain. Don't know whether I'm travelling to Europe yet or not. Not paying airfare if I do, though of course I have to pay at least one rail trip from my work destination to Paris. If it doesn't work out this season, there is another possibility in summer 2015.
I wouldn't be there long, and would be looking for a cheap place to stay for a few days. (I DO NOT want to stay with friends; becoming too much of a grumpy old git...).

Look! A man with a book! I think cafés were far more interesting before smartphones and social media.

I was actually surprised on my most recent visit to Paris how much actual reading was going on outside cafes and how little smartphone gazing--at least by the standards I am accustomed to. I am heartened to discover that fixation on one's phone while socializing here has become slightly taboo or at least considered a bit rude if done too frequently. I even know one local bar where it is quite explicitly frowned upon.

More great photos Kerouac - I particularly like the old guy with his black 'beanie' and that startling hoodie jacket!

How many "cafés du commerce" are there anyway?
I presume that Le Tramway is near the tramline...

Names like "café du commerce" or "café des sports" are countless. Actually, Le Tramway was at least 3 blocks from the tramway, so I wondered if they grabbed the name anyway before somebody else got it or if they have had that name since the early 20th century when there were tramway lines everywhere in Paris.

The "smoking dog" would be worth seeing. Must be difficult to pick out a name to stand out from the crowd.

There is actually a much more famous " Au chien qui fume" at Les Halles, but it is a restaurant now rather than a café. www.auchienquifume.com/

Excellent addition/update. The outdoor seating is getting a bit thinly utilized as the weather turns, fewer people watching possibilities.
