Series 2 has just started here . I did not watch any of Series 1 but so many friends and family have recommended it that I succumbed and watched the first episode of series 2 today on catch up.
Yes it could possibly be described as costume/ period drama but it is so absolutely not Downton, in just about every way. I wonder if it will appeal to a wider audience outside the UK ?
So the plot ... Working class gang life in Birmingham and London just after the First World War ; Gypsy, Irish , Italian and Jewish mobs; nasty politicians and secret service ; some great actors and melodrama aplenty. Not sure if the violence will be too much for me, but so far I want to see more.
The filming and mood setting is just so good , and the music is fab.
Any one else seen it yet ?

Well, I've watched two episodes, and I don't know if I'll be going much further. Cillian Murphy and Sam Neill are great, of course. Shows like this, The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, however, aren't really to my taste; I'm not really a fan of the mob genre.
I can imagine there would be obstacles to success in North America. I have no problem with the accents, but unless they're posh, most North Americans have a hard time with them. Also, the historical context is really important, the post-war atmosphere with all the various ideologies bumping up against one another: unions, communism, women's rights, the Northern Ireland situation. I find the time period fascinating but the whole gangster thing just leaves me a little tired. Sorry! And thanks for letting us know about it. I'm sure it'll be a great treat for anyone who enjoys shows like this.

Lugg, I completely missed seeing this thread. I had made mention of it last year in Small Screening but it drew no comment. Also, seeing the date of this OP, it was not something I had heard of until last year. I really, really love this series. I just started season 3 this week because it only just became available here. Yes, a lot of violence yet it seems more realistic than other violent shows or movies. (I cannot abide Quentin Tarantino because of this, he sensationalizes it ). I never really could wrap my head around The Sopranos. As a period piece, Peaky Blinders really works. The writing, the acting, the costumes and location shots are so well done. Occasionally, I have some difficulty with the dialect but, not to an extreme. (If I miss a line, I go back...) Anyway, I am trying really hard not to binge through Season 3 and it's really difficult, it's that riveting. (As an aside, Tommy Shelby is HOT!!)
Oh, and ditto on the music!! Brilliant!!!!

I plowed through Series 3 although, it seemed so swift...darn.
Lots of fodder to be sure for future episodes...
Ah, those eyes.....
The varied characters, most especially the women of that era are portrayed in a very strong and most unusual way, much to my delight. Strong, convicted, ruthless, protective, and yet, evocative, very appealing and feminine, no wilting violets that I can detect.

I tried the first episode of Peaky Blinders & couldn't get into it, but that has happened to me with other series that I wound up liking very much. Based on the recommendations here, I'll probably take another run at PB. Cheery, it's only because of my great love for you that I am attempting (only attempting, mind you) to forgive you for your wrong-headed stance on Downton.

I initially thought that it was something to do with my politics Bixa...but then I have watched other period dramas and enjoyed them tremendously. I usually love Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville but found Downton very annoying. In the seventies I didn't watch Upstairs Downstairs but LOVED The Duchess of Duke Street. It's personal taste innit? Recently I watched and enjoyed Ripper Street which isn't exactly historically accurate or anything....
Or I could just be a BBC snob....

I'm not a royalist and loathe the class system here in the UK. There is a show in the beeb atm where Mary Berry (a national treasure by all accounts) visits rich bastar people in 'stately homes' (most of which are heavily subsidised by the public via the national trust) and is terribly reverential to the owners who just happen to have been lucky enough to have been born into a powerful family...
I love cookery shows and have several of Mary Berry's recipe books but I hate this show....

Cheery, do you like ""Keeping up Appearances"? Although it is OTT with the characters and plots, it is a satire on the class system in England and the lengths Mrs Bucket (pronounced 'Bouquet') goes to in order to insinuate herself into the upper class while her family are oh so working class and happy with it.
It is not quite accurate to say Oz has no class system, but what is there is based on achievement rather than birth family. Even then, the idea of someone being 'better' than another and therefore treated differently is not common.
Indigenous communities have their own hierarchies according to their learning and initiations and their Elders command a level of honour and respect which can seem like a class distinction. Many of the communities are led by women who have learned the lore while the men haven't, but this starting to change and the "men's business" is becoming important again.
