After spending a night in Dinant, it was necessary for me to return to Paris, but I wanted to stop in at least one other town before heading back into France. So, without having the slightest idea if the town was picturesque or not, I decided to make a brief visit to Chimay, which is at least famous to anyone who drinks beer. Frankly, I have no idea whether the Belgians themselves consider "Chimay" to be a brand of any importance, but it is a major reference in France, where everybody knows the logo. ]

I think the little solarium is so enchanting as it speaks of the thirst people in the gloomy Low Countries have for any scrap of sunshine.
Yes, I admit that if I hear "Chimay", I think "beer". And I'm not even much of a beer aficionada.

I was parked next to this tiny chapel. I already forgot the name of the saint, but it was marked that he was specialised in convulsions, panic attacks, epilepsy, and complicated childbirth. Ah, the name has come back to me: Saint Ghislain. Ghislain/Ghislaine is actually quite a common name in northeastern France, so I imagine that it is the same for this part of Belgium.

Charming little visit, thanks. I loved the seashell holy water font in the church. Great bird bath?

Of course I cannot speak for all the Belgians, but Chimay is popular in Belgium. Most cafés have it on tap (draught?). It's just one of those beers. I usually use dark Chimay (blue label) in my 'stoofvlees' (Flemish stew).

It is a must in many cafés in France, too, especially Paris, although I imagine that only the Belgian bars of Paris (or other cities) have it on tap, except maybe in cities like Lille or Valenciennes.

Chimay ale, that once seemed so exotic and rare, can now be bought here in bottles in just about any local supermarket. When I saw the thread title, the ale is immediately what I thought of, philistine that I am.
