Glorious, glorious Kerouac! I spotted those little lights in the trees on the Champs Elysees - the ones forming a golden goblet - when we were walking down in late September. I remarked to my husband that they are getting the Champs ready quite early so as nothing will not be in full operation. Or, did they leave them there all year......?

These are gorgeous, Kerouac. Now that it is December I can come back to this thread again and appreciate it. For me, I am mostly sad at missing the Christmas markets, they look extraordinary. All that food (which to me, is what Christmas is about, anyway)! I'm sorry, I know we are all virtuous little consumers who are sharply aware of our environmental impact on the world and who dutifully recycle and use less toilet paper, but I hate LED Christmas lights! I just do. I'm a bad person, I know. I would rather turn my old-fashioned incandescent lights on for 15 minutes a day than have to look at those curiously-garish-but-hopelessly-unfestive blue lights endlessly. Electric Christmas lights were originally supposed to replicate live candles on a tree; now, many of those photos look like the neon displays in a sex shop. OK, I'm not curmudgeonly in many aspects of my life, but this is one thing I'm sticking to. I've attracted abuse on facebook because of my views on compact fluorescent lighting, and I welcome your scorn here!

My husband hates LED Christmas lights, too, Lizzy. Hates.

I agree with you Lizzy, I do not like or have any of the LED lights. We are off to Canadian Tire this weekend to buy as many packages of the clear replacement bulbs as we can find. We have a string of clear lights surrounding our deck that are set on a timer. There is only one street light way up on the road away from the house so we have the lights on timers down the stairs from the driveway to make your way down to the deck to the house at night. While they are function for us, they are festive at this time of the year.

Kerouac, maybe not ALL the photos were up to your high standard....but quite good I thought. The content was what matters and I enjoyed so many. Just look at the curious gaze from the chef stirring some potatoes? Chestnuts? The amused look on the face of the pretty girl with brown tresses as she glances at Father Xmas. Those lights streaming in a cascade down the front of Chez Eugene and others were glorious. Thanks for making the trip to show us what was going on up there!

I always love Kerouac's photo essays, even if his regular camera is in the hospital.
I feel rather nonplussed now about my churlish LED rant, but it has nothing to do with my appreciation of this thread, and K's intrepid nature, traversing the city to gve us all a glimpse of the season. Thank you, K!

Mossie, I've been to that as I had an artist friend there who participated, but I've lost all trace of him. Oooh, les artistes!

Bravo Kerouac for braving the weather. You really suffer for your art, and to entertain us.

Le Bon Marché seems to not like the "string technology" favoured by Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, so its animated windows are pretty dreary in comparison.

That is pathetic compared to Printemps and GL. Thanks for making the effort to show us. The Madeleine show is very effective.

I agree. What a stupid message, All they wanted was their name up in lights. If so - don't bother because we don't care.

There does not seem to be a "city" Christmas tree this year like over the past few years on Place de la Concorde. Frankly, I do not miss it, because it was always off on a corner where most people would never even see it. I may be mistaken since I have not been there this week, but I really don't think that they would put it up so late. So the main Paris Christmas tree is probably the one provided by the diocese of Notre Dame.

Kerouac suffers, and we delight. Oh, the lights.
Fun to see the facade of La Crémaillère 1900, a Montmartre restaurant where we took shelter one rainy evening. It seemed a little faux to me, but what do I know? I never know what will please my husband; he loved it there.
That's a beautiful tree in front of Notre Dame.

You would never know it's Xmas here. No windows aglow, no decorations hanging from trees, nada. Why so little......theft, theft, theft!

Where does the Notre Dame tree come from?

From Russia.

It is a gift from the city of Moscow, which created a certain amount of controversy.

However, the tree at the Elysée palace is guaranteed French.

Since I have been showing traditional Paris streets during the Christmas season for the past several years (frankly, just look at my old Christmas threads and you will see how much I am repeating myself -- thank god they change the style of illumination from time to time). So I thought it might be interesting to show how Christmas is handled in Little India, just south from where I live. One of the most obvious things is that you don't have to be Christian to celebrate Christmas here, but I knew that already from all of my Maghrebi bakeries and Islamic butcher who tend to decorate even more than many other places.

Most unusual - looks like petals or leaves. I see Samsung is brightly lit too.
