No, I haven't been on a diet recently, but I'm sure that there are a number of us who wouldn't mind losing a few kilos. I came across this video which show what happens when you lose a huge amount of weight relatively fast. It seems to me that "skin removal surgery" can fix the problem, but it is not discussed here.

i wonder would this go away over time if he manages to keep his weight down? or would it remain that way without surgery?

He is fairly young, so if he keeps exercising, a lot of that will be absorbed, as young skin is elastic.
Anyone a bit older would need some surgery, not just for aesthetics, but for health reasons, as skin folds can cause nasty things (though he would have had those and more in morbid obesity).

Yes, that amount of weight loss, whether or not it was surgical or self disciplined requires vigorous exercise to regain muscle and skin tone. Someone I know from way back who was grossly obscene lost a dramatic amount of weight, and when I saw his body,it was so grotesque with stretch marks, it was obvious how much exercise could have made a difference.

I can pretty well bet the skin will not shrink back. Genetics. If it doesn't shrink up while you're losing it, the bags of skin afterwards will always be with you, unless you can affford surgery. And then you have the scars.

I talked about that with a doctor once and she said that people who lose a lot of weight on their stomachs have a sort of "apron" of fat hanging down that has to be removed surgically.

That type of surgery is often covered in countries where there is a public health system. I know someone who had it done. I think most of the scar disappears into a skin fold.
