... and now Austria. The UK threat warning has also been increased to severe ( = highly likely ....the second highest level) following the atrocities in France and Austria

Today on the 5th anniversary of the Bataclan (and other) killings, President-elect Biden sent a message of solidarity to France. Lame duck President Trump did not.
If anybody gets a chance to see it, there is a three-part Netflix series called Fluctuat Nec Mergitur (the motto of the city of Paris) which is astoundingly moving. It follows the timeline from the Stade de France to the five cafés that were attacked and finally the Bataclan using exclusively the testimony of the survivors, the firemen, the police, the anti-terrorist squad to recount every moment of that night.
the first ten minutes:

Beautiful, poignant and very moving. Thank you Kerouac. I don't speak French but I understood every word emotionally.

Thank you Kerouac for posting this. I still remember seeing the 'breaking news' that night. Too sad for words.

I shall certainly watch the documentary-thank you K2 and for the video ... I read an article today about the impact of the attack; it was so incredibly moving yet painful to read as it caught up with some of the survivors who described the ramifications of this appalling act of terrorism on their lives. I will have to go back to see if I can find the link.

After six years of investigations and nine months of hearings in a specially built courtroom, today the verdict will finally be given. Of the 20 defendants, Salah Abdeslam is the only surviving terrorist, since he chickened out when he arrived at his target in the 18th arrondissement and just saw young people his age having fun. Nevertheless, he is the person facing the most extreme sentence -- life in prison with no possibility of parole. I do understand that many non Europeans find this very lenient anyway. Landmark Paris attacks trial leaves riddles unsolved, tears unnumbered

Well, we no longer have the death penalty either, and it would do nothing to restore the lives/health of the victims or relieve the sadness of their families and friends.
Is Salah Abdeslam French or Belgian? It seems their old neighbourhood has changed quite a bit since then.

Salah Abdeslam is French even though he was born and raised in Brussels. I have no idea why he is not considered a French-Belgian dual national. Most of the other terrorists on trial are Belgian and will be deported from France after serving their sentences (assuming they are convicted, but that seems pretty certain), which is something that will probably not please Belgium in about 20 years.
But the world will have changed so much by then, who knows?

The verdicts have been anounced. Incompressible life sentence for Salah Abdeslam. Between 1 and 30 years for the other defendants.
They have 10 days to file an appeal.

I am satisfied that this thread which started the day after the Charlie Hebdo attacks has lasted until the day after the trial for the Bataclan. And terror lives on.

Unfortunately.
We must not forget that there is also State terror.

This trial was minimally covered in the US, however I did follow it online. Reading testimony from the survivors at Bataclan was harrowing to say the least.

One interesting thing is that the least implicated defendants (provided false ID for the terrorists without knowing why, etc.) who only got a two year sentence and who were therefore released immediately after the verdict since they had been incarcerated longer than that were hugged in sympathy by some of the attending victims who understood that they were victims too.

K2 - One angle emphasized here was that the attack was in response to French attacks in Syria as opposed to radical Muslim ideology.

K2,BJD - I agree totally - but generally our US newspaper editorial boards steer well away from condemnation of 'minority' religious beliefs. I was beyond irritated that the NYT correspondent in Paris - Richard Cohen seemed to totally ignore that the trial was even taking place.

Richard Cohen is a useless human being. Yes, I understand that the American media need to simplify all of the issues. Everything is black or white and has a very simple explanation.
