The American presidential election is of course occupying most of the news in France at the moment, but coverage of the first anniversary of the Bataclan and café/restaurant attacks is beginning to emerge. Sting is reopening the Bataclan with a concert on November 12th, just one day short of the anniversary. About 500 tickets were given to friends and family -- and survivors -- and the other 1000 tickets sold out within an hour. As for the Eagles of Death Metal, who were performing when the attack occurred, they will apparently be attending the concert but have not been invited to perform again due to the various political comments by the leader of the group. Sting will be performing without a fee, and all of the money from the concert will be given to associations for the victims.
On November 13th, the anniversary date, a plaque will be unveiled at the Bataclan.

Sting is behaving like a great man.

Yes, it is lovely. I admitted to reopening this thread with some trepidation, given the global context.
Yes, the leader of the Eagles of Death Metal has sounded like a Christianist NRA clone of the Islamist bastards... and they kill innocent people too.

Of course no one is an angel. While Sting's gesture is very nice, he is also releasing a new album at the same time. I am sure that the free publicity will not harm sales at all.

In fairness, the album's release might have already been in the works.
I echo LaGatta's comment about the trepidation in opening this thread.
You have to admire the courage of the survivors, of their families, and of any Bataclan workers not present at the attack who will be attending the concert.

Yes, I admit as afraid I am of the Donald, I'm just as afraid of the reactions his fuck you to the world could provoke. Remember, he even insulted the Muslim parents of a fallen soldier. That is a great taboo even for conservatives.

Sad memories for this time of the year. Yesterday being poppy day, the 11th day of the 11th hour, - not one red poppy spotted anywhere here, the majority do not know the meaning and as that kind of history is not taught in our schools, why would they. It poured with rain so maybe a few miserable army officers stood quietly to attention as they played the Last Post at our cenotaph, but as I was not there I can't say for sure. I was pleased to see Prince Harry leading the service in London.
And tomorrow the Bataclan memories.

There was already a commemorative concert by Mika, who grew up in Paris, on television last night.

It's not the fault of the media. They are just doing their job covering an important anniversary. But seeing them camped out today in all of the same places for their sporadic 2-minute news bytes all through the day sent chills through my spine.

The worldwide French satellite channel will be broadcasting Sting's concert with Ibrahim Maalouf at the Bataclan Sunday night in Europe and on Monday in the rest of the world.

Do you happen to know if we can view that here in Québec? It might be via ARTE TV here. I don't have a television, but can usually watch such broadcasts/webcasts on my computer.

It must have been an incredibly emotional evening for those intimately involved, as well as other residents of Paris.

Checking YouTube, it looks like we will be able to view video of the concert here in the US after 24 hours. Hopefully, it will be an easy process for you, Lagatta, and all others who are interested.
I also found a one minute clip uploaded a few hours ago, but it seems to be gone now. You might try checking YouTube or Google to see what pops up.

True, but in terms of being very fit at "a certain age", Sting reminds me more of Tina Turner.

The machete attack in the Louvre shopping mall this morning was not nearly as bad as the media (and Trump) are going to make it. One of the attacked soldiers got a little cut on the scalp, and the attacker was awarded with five bullets in his guts, so he might not make it.
Meanwhile, the mall (Carrousel du Louvre) and the museum are locked up with all of the people inside, which will annoy the tourists on a tight schedule.

Have not seen this news on TV yet - just pondering how a man got into the mall with a machete. Its a pretty big item. Are there no more bag searches or metal detectors to pass through? Only thing I remember is the food court down there and the shops selling perfume etc. Very vague in my memory now.

Searches continue everywhere, but it is pretty hit-and-miss these days. I presume that as of this afternoon, they will be a bit more serious about it again.

He had a machete? I heard it was a knife. Are the tourists free to go back home now?

As I understand it from the BBC news he pulled out the Knife/machete when approached by a soldier who wanted him to open his bag. He attacked this soldier and one of the other soldiers present shot him, hopefully it will soon prove to be fatally.

A quite ironic detail of today's attack is that the perpetrator (whose life is no longer in danger and who will be interrogated tomorrow), is that the doctor in charge of the emergency room today at the Hôpital Georges Pompidou was Patrick Pelloux, a member of the staff of Charlie Hebdo two years ago and the first person to arrive on the scene of that massacre after just missing their weekly meeting. He may have had some conflicting feelings about saving a life today.

One thing that I have learned from the news reports is that there is a machete store in Paris, because the attacker bought his two machetes after arriving here. Yay!

And after all that trouble you went to in order to smuggle that nice personalized one into France! What exactly is a machete store called? I suppose if you had a knife (or machete) completely covered with a dense sheath, it might not be picked up with a cursory wanding. That does beg the question, though, of exactly how it would be concealed in such a way that it could be pulled out and brandished.

As an experienced machete wielding jungle tamer, I wonder the same Bixa.
And, did he actually have two machetes on him?
