If you say it often enough and loud enough people will believe it.
Just like US and Europeans think Australian waters are seething with sharks and box jellyfish and our land crawls with deadly snakes and spiders. Not to mention the ferocious "drop bears"
Why are these patently untrue statements not refuted by the high profile leaders, complete with statistics? Is it because it suits them to keep the people feeling insecure so the leaders can enact more controlling laws in the name of security?

It's often because many if our conservative leaders absolutely believe the same crap.

It drives me crazy. I am still seething from the second Iraqi war when Colin Powell presented "recent" satellite photos of "WMD" that needed to be destroyed in Iraq. The very next day, French news showed that these so called photos were actually 5 years old and came from French satellites showing a dairy plant or some such. Did any of the international media pick this up to correct what Colin Powell had said? Not a single one...

Er, Questa, what is a "drop bear"? This particular mistruth does not seem to have reached France yet.

I followed a bit of the J.K. Rowlings tweets but it all became a bit too obscure for me after awhile, probably due to an insufficiency of British culture.

Various methods suggested to deter drop bear attacks include placing forks in the hair, having Vegemite or toothpaste spread behind the ears or in the armpits, urinating on oneself, and only speaking English in an Australian accent.[3][4]en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_bear

From Questa...this chap is detested for his attitude to refugees here, but you may like his style
If only all our politicians stop the politically correct spin and be as refreshingly straight forward as this guy! I'm sure you won't see this interview aired in the mainstream media. Part of the transcript of an interview aired on Al Jazeera that a friend sent me, where Scott Morrison, MP was invited for comment. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Transcript Station: Al JaZeERa ENGLISH Date: 9/1/2015... Program: The STREAM Time:7:06 AM Compere: AL JAZEERA Summary ID:W00059934129 --------------------------- INTERVIEW ON CHARLIE HEBDO KILLINGS
MORRISON: I’m sorry. I have to interrupt here. I’m sorry I am not going to sit here and listen to people stupidly suggest that the French or the magazine or anyone brought this on themselves. Are you for real? We have a dozen people dead, killed in the name of a religious belief and you are seriously going to even slightly justify this?
COMPERE: I don’t think anyone is justifying anything here.
MORRISON: Well that’s not what I am hearing. I’m hearing this vaguely worded defence that France shouldn’t have done this and Sarkozy said that two years ago, and if they didn’t draw Mohammed then this might not of happened or whatever. It is obscene and a gutless way of almost saying they all deserved this. Well if you believe that you are about as bad as the idiot who thinks the pretty girl in the short skirt is asking to be raped so she better watch out.
COMPERE: That’s a ridiculous comparison.
MORRISON: Is it ridiculous? Tell me how? It’s the “you were asking for it” way of thinking. Your logic is those who drew the pictures should have known better and should have known what the response would be. Where as I say, if you can’t accept that people have different views to you then maybe the problem is with you if your response is the pull out an AK and go nuts.
COMPERE: Well, the material was designed to offend.
MORRISON: And so what. A lot of what I’ve heard here today has offended me but if you’re civilised, and I think that’s a major issue with some of the people we are talking about, if you are civilised you just get on with it. We shouldn’t have to have special rules for special people.
COMPERE: No-one is suggesting special rules just an understanding that some things are offensive.
MORRISON: So OK, we can have a bit of fun with the Pope, with Buddha, Jesus Christ on the Cross, The Dalai Lama, The Queen, Barack Obama. Want to add to the list? But not anything or anyone associated with Muslims. They’re special apparently. And that’s where all this free speech talk I’m hearing falls to bits. If you defend free speech then you defend offensive speech as well. It’s real easy to stand up for the nice stuff but sometime it gets ugly and if you are fair dinkum, as we say in Australia, you stand for all. Now, I’m not fond of Jesus Christ jokes but if you crack one you shouldn’t fear a few goons showing up with AK47s and shooting everyone in the office dead at their desks. So please, spare me the justification garbage for these terrorists being upset and just responding to provocation. If you think they are even slightly justified for killing people who drew some pictures then I’m afraid you are over in their column. COMPERE: OK I take your point but if you deliberately set out to offend there are consequences.
MORRISON: Yes there are. People might not buy your magazine or you get nasty letters in the mail from upset people but not a dozen of your workmates dead at their desks, and here we are again talking about consequences. It’s back to the same argument as the pretty girl in the bar example. If you think she’s asking to be raped you are, in my view, unfit for civilised society. You are uncivilised and maybe that’s something we should be spending a bit of energy on.

Are drop bears Muslim?
I think K2 missed the no-go zone just west of the railway tracks ... seems to be a bit farther north, though it is hard to tell on such a tiny map.
Why have I always been able to buy wine and beer in those Islamist strongholds? And wear my hair loose...
The other funny thing is how gleeful the young "no-go zone" expert looks recounting his exploits in darkest Paris.

Yes, well today there was a multitude of demonstrations all over the world against Charlie Hebdo and France, but that was to be expected. People even died in Niger. French cultural centres were firebombed, restaurants and other commerces were attacked and pillaged. Algeria, Mali, Pakistan, Yemen, Senegal all had demonstrations against France. Many other countries would have done so, but demonstrations are forbidden in lots of countries. Kind of ironic, isn't it? Quite a few Catholic churches were destroyed in Africa, which tends to contradict the claim of the demonstrators that they respect other religions and do not accept that Islam be subjected to criticism.
François Hollande made a speech today reaffirming freedom of speech and regretting that many countries have not yet had the opportunity to understand the importance of the concept.
Meanwhile, the Charlie Hebdo print run has now been increased from 5 million to 7 million (obviously a world record), because it is still hard to get a copy. Germany and Belgium are demanding to receive far more copies as well because people are going wild trying to find them. I confess that I myself have not managed to get a copy even though I was at major newsstands at 7am this morning -- but I know that I will finally get a copy soon.

There is a demand that 500,000 copies should be sent to Oz for here and New Zealand.
Why have they not gone online, subscription only. That would ensure money coming in for a bit longer when the fuss dies down (and preserve a few trees).

That is true, questa, given that a lot of people who are clamouring for a copy don't even read French, or certainly not enough to get the jokes.
Not just the trees, also the fuel for sending them so far.

The photos of the edited-out women was on the front page of the paper (Int'l NY Times) last Monday. There are obviously no limits to religious fanaticism, whatever the religion.
I found it ironic too that in Niger there were people (men!) yelling in the streets, trashing churches and burning French flags in anger over a picture, meanwhile on their border with Nigeria, army troops are being sent to try to prevent Boko Haram from crossing into the country and killing and kidnapping people.

This is extremely far from my area of expertise, but I heard recently that the Saudi royal house has spent 100 billion dollars to promote a specific fundamentalist Islam. That kind of money can buy a lot of promoting.

Here is a very weak retraction from Fox News. They're not saying they were wrong, just that they cannot prove that they were right.

Has Fox News ever admitted it wasn't completely correct?

Yes, but I would have preferred a more deadpan delivery contrasted with the absurd sensationalist headlines and flames. Matter of taste, I guess.

It's pretty stupid to sue -- it means they take Fox News seriously!

I think they could sue on the basis of the negative financial impact that spreading lies has on tourism and trade. I think it's a little like Don Quixote tilting at windmills, but good for Paris for striking back.
