I didn't want to believe it when my first ever episode of hives broke out in July, but I am now obliged to admit after a new prescription last week, it is confirmed that I have an allergy to antibiotics. The hives were not as bad this time because I recognised the symptoms faster and stopped the antibiotics faster. Also, I still had lotion from the last time to relieve the scratching.
Is anybody else in this situation? I have to go to my normal doctor tomorrow anyway and will tell him about this, but I am wondering what sort of medicine you take when you can't take antibiotics.

I am allergic to penicillin. When I need an antibiotic my doctor prescribes one not related to penicillin. There should be something else that will work for you.
I cannot remember what type of antibiotic I took when I had the abcessed tooth, but my dentist told me I needed to make sure I took a probiotic to keep my stomach from having major upset. Yogurt probably would have worked, but since I don't eat it I purchased a good, refrigerated brand of probiotic tablets instead. They were truly worth every penny.

My wife was allergic to penicillin and some antibiotics, but the quacks were able to find substitutes although we had some uncomfortable times along the way. So you have my sympathy Kerouac and I hope your doctor can find a remedy.

Yes, I'm sure they have alternatives these days, you shouldn't have a problem. My cat was allergic to penicillan; it's what killed her. Who knew animals were allergic?

I seem to be unable to take Augmentin, a combination of amoxicillin and clavanulic acid (aka Amox-Clav) that my oral surgeon likes to use after extractions and implants.
The first time I took it, I started throwing up a few hours later; it felt very much like food poisoning (i.e. terrible!) Called the oral surgeon and got switched to plain old amoxicillin and no more issues.
Foolishly, I didn’t throw away or even put away the bottle of Augmentin stashing it in my bathroom drawer.
Months later, I grabbed the wrong bottle in the dark, and took a tablet of what I thought was my urologist-prescribed sulfa antibiotic for warding off UTI’s after “date nights”.
Hours later I was puking my guts out and lying next to the toilet, just like food poisoning again. Pretty solid confirmation of an intolerance to Augmentin, but no hives or anaphylaxis. So am I allergic? I don’t know. But I do know I’m not taking that stuff on purpose again!
