Starting this a bit late, but here are the results of the 2015 BAFTA awards. I have been betting on Eddie Redmayne for the Oscars as well. Boyhood won best film, and Grand Budapest Hotel won the greatest number of awards.

Wrong kind of entertainment! As I recall, the red carpet catfest is on the Port & Starboard branch.

Well, Timbuktu was the big winner at the French Academy Awards tonight with 7 wins. Sunday night it will magically transform itself into a Mauritanian film to try for the best foreign film Oscar in Hollywood.

The main thing that struck the media about the César awards last night was how it gave most of the acting awards to extremely young people.
Best actor - Pierre Niney for Yves Saint Laurent, age 25 Best actress - Adèle Haenel for Les Combattants, age 26 Best supporting actor - Reda Kateb for Hippocrate, age 37 -- he's the old guy Best supporting actress - Kristen Stewart for Clouds of Sils Maria, age 24 Best male newcomer - Kevin Azaïs for Les Combattants, age 23 Best female newcomer - Louane Emera for La Famille Bélier, age 18
Such awards (except for the newcomers) are pretty amazing when you are up against people like Catherine Deneuve, Marion Cotillard, Juliette Binoche, Romain Duris, Niels Arestrup, etc.

Well, I watched the Oscars (starting at 2:30am) and was at least confirmed in my certainty that Eddie Redmayne would win best actor. I have to wait until March 18 to see Still Alice and until the day after tomorrow to see Birdman.

Every time I see stills from Birdman I think I must have liked it more than it seemed at the time. It has cool visuals.
Our daughter's been summarily laid off from her job for budget reasons, is coming home for a few days of comfort food and TLC. Unfortunately the only big screen film currently in town that I'd care to see is Deux Jours, Une Nuit. Probably not a good choice to take her; we'll rent Grand Budapest instead.

Well, both of them are worth seeing. I'm not sure if I would categorize Grand Budapest Hotel as an optimistic movie anyway.

I'm not looking for optimism as much as something that's not about a young woman desperate for a job. I'll get around to it sometime.
My response to Birdman is based on my own total-fed-up-ness with ego trips in general. That and films where gorgeous young women lust after middle-aged men.

The 75 year old men who run Hollywood think that real life is like that, because their own real life is like that, even if the 'lust' is just an act.
