Actually I read today that the confusion over "year of the goat" or "year of the sheep" is due to the fact that the Chinese language does not have a word to distiguish between them. Sort of like if English just had the word "fowl" and left us to decide how to describe chickens, ducks, geese, etc. Today was the day of the big parade in the principal Chinatown of the city. I never stay for the actual parade but I like to see the preparations, and I am always particularly happy to see that the local melting pot allows young people of any ethnicity to be Chinese on a day like this.

Marvelous, Kerouac! I loved all the brightly colored costumes, though the masks were a bit scary. The video really gives us a sense of the atmosphere. Where were you filming? Was this taking place anywhere near the McDonalds with the sign in Chinese and the high rise apartment building with the fish and vines painted down the side?

No, it is a bit closer to the centre of Chinatown. Those other places are close to the tramway on the edge of the city. The actual starting point of the parade each year is 44 avenue d'Ivry, where the dragons emerge from the underground street and temple there. However, the parade goes to those other areas later since the full route is:
- 44 avenue d'Ivry - Avenue de Choisy - Place d'Italie - Avenue d'Italie - Rue de Tolbiac - Avenue de Choisy - Boulevard Masséna - Avenue d'Ivry

How did I miss this! Wonderful colourful scenes of this lively celebration. We have so few Chinese in our town I only knew it was Chinese New Year when I saw our local restaurant closed for three days. Thanks for going and recording the event kerouac!

Coming very late to this marvelous and colorful thread. Wow -- I can almost smell the incense and gunpowder. Kerouac, you have surpassed yourself with the various portraits, both group & individual. If you can get me one of those big sequined carp, I'd be forever in your debt!
