A lovely report on a very different place. One thing really struck me, and that was the gate to the medaieval part which really reminded me of the Westgate in Canterbury. I suppose they belong to the same period.

Thank you all for the comments and the additional info.
I am not sure Bixa, about best time of year - maybe a little later would be good say May or maybe September so the outdoor restaurants and opera etc can be enjoyed ?

Lugg - thank you so much for putting up the link to Pisa and Lucca. It looks so much better than the small area we saw. I guess when one is on a fixed tour you are going to miss an awful lot. I had forgotten about your visit in 2015 - had I remembered I doubt whether we could have changed our program much, but at least it shows a night or two in Lucca may be a good thing. I always envy you guys in the UK and France because you are just a hop skip and jump away!

I’ve enjoyed revisiting this thread. The friendly atmosphere you found back during your visit seems just what I’m looking for during an extended stay next spring. It looks like there will be plenty of places to wander, explore and enjoy.

I think it would be perfect place to stay for an extended visit ; I would have loved to see more of the surrounding area . I seem to remember there were quite a few places to visit and of course having the train station in town is also handy. I know Pisa has a bad rep sometimes but I am so glad I visited there too but just for the day. I would not have wanted any longer.

Thanks for confirming my idea, Lugg. I’m glad you enjoyed your time in Lucca. I’ll start looking more earnestly at accommodations and see what’s available.
