Sounds like you'd better step up the Italian lessons, Bixa.

So kind, Huckle! I also thank you for pointing me to the Robert Alajamo book, which I see Amazon has in stock. The second review of it is worth reading, although I find your description far more apt, poetic, and succinct. I would love to know any stories or reminiscences of Palermo you might care to share! As for the bumping, that's not the shameless self promotion it would seem. Since Photobucket's recent freezing of accounts around the world, many wonderful threads on anyport have been left without their pictures. The idea was to bump still intact threads up and force the stricken threads down so that visitors to the forum wouldn't get the wrong idea by clicking on intriguingly titled reports only to come up empty. (and it keeps the p'bucket affected threads visible enough so that their authors can find and fix them if they wish) What I didn't know was that bumping would force all those older threads to show up on top in the Recent Threads section. Oh well, maybe it will mean that more people will find threads they missed the first time around.

It's a date(s), Huckle! It would have been wonderful to have been with you there, as I know you must be able to point out all kinds of things not in any guide books. I so want to go back at a cooler time of year and to spend more time there -- in a self-catering apartment the next trip. So interesting that you went because of the art nouveau style and also that you mention the Florio family. I visited Favignana and saw Ignazio Florio's house there. It's at #39 in my Trapani thread and includes a picture of the family living it up. The Liberty/Art Nouveau all over Palermo is striking and adds so much to the faded elegance feel of the city. Your comment about Palermo being "close to greatness but again didn't make it" is so apt. And amen to the love at first sight! If you are interested, here are the specifically Palermo threads from my trip to Sicily -- just click the titles: Palermo's CathedralBaroque exuberance in stone and stucco (Santa Cita church) La Martorana, PalermoCappella Palatina, Palermo
