Thank you for the tech instructions Bixa. I thought I had got it right.
Your link was most fascinating yet, certainly not news to me.
The socio-economic factors that came into play post Katrina will for a very long time be a major factor in the "reshaping" or as some would say "gentrification" of the city.
(Some of this was addressed to a certain degree in the Treme series ).
The "road home" Federal program was a joke,.
Some are still waiting on monies to come through while their former home is either rotting,and/or being classified as "blighted", in which case the owners have little to no recourse to save
because either they are not here, or they don't have the money to do anything.
What many people do not understand, and I only learned of it just a few years before Katrina even occurred is; many properties have been handed down to the next generation, keeping them within the family but, no actual documented title of possession on record.
Therefore, what has become know as a "clouded title" prevents the family who was living there to actually prove it is theirs does not exist.
(Add to this, the destroying of many documents from the flooding both at people's homes and at City Hall).
It's snafu after snafu after snafu...
On another note, all kinds of commemorative ceremonies etc are scheduled for this week and upcoming weekend.
Lots of politicians due to arrive, President Obama, former US Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and goodness knows who else.
I would imagine that some of the "hopefuls" will make an appearance as well.
Quite the circus.
Oh, and this weeks New Yorker has a commemorative cover.
