Presently pending arrival in NYC and curious to know what is going on with the 2nd Avenue subway, also, where is the best place to pick up on he Highline as it was in the dead of winter when I was last there.

It will be a long time before the 2nd Avenue subway is completed. You'll see lots of evidence of the work. Though, in the long run, I assume it will be good for business, I can't help but commiserate with business owners along the sections of the street that are under construction.
Though I can tell you there are rats the size of squirrels in Ruppett Park, as well as lots of mosquitoes, I can't tell you anything about the Highline. I never made it to that side of the city. I hope you get over that way, Casimira.
S has been remarking about how the heat in NYC has finally broken and the weather has been lovely. September sounds like a good time to visit.

Pope Francis will be visiting New York City next month and I thought this New York Times opinion piece comparing the pope to "The Donald" was very interesting. The anti-Trump commethI also like the part where it says: In a few weeks, Pope Francis will visit our fair land, a fitting pivot from the Summer of Trump, closing out a gluttonous episode of narcissism, rudeness, frivolity and xenophobia. For all that the orangutan-haired vulgarian has done to elevate the worst human traits a public figure can have, Francis is the anti-Trump.

Oh JEEZUMS!! Just now seeing this.
Twice while I was visiting NYC, President Obama was also in the city. The first time was on 9/9/09. A most memorable day. I was on a 5th Ave. bus and it was barely moving. Lots of impatient people. I got off at a certain point somewhere around 79th I wanna say, where there's a thoroughfare through Central Park. There was a gathering of people, by no means a mob, several police. I asked one woman what the deal was. She told me that President Obama was in town to attend a memorial service for Walter Cronkite and would be passing by. COOL I thought. And, indeed it was. No heavy duty , major security measures and when his limo crossed 5th he rolled down his window and waved. The lot of us standing there kinda looked at one another like, "hey, we share a common bond". It was plain and simple one of those moments.

Anyway, I got sidelined there. Yes, I know that the 2nd Ave subway is no where near completion and yes, has been a major burden on many of the merchants along that stretch. NYC has the unique pleasure of small merchants who provide useful services and have been in business for umpteen years. Cobblers, locksmiths, some quasi-antique stores, small ethnic take out places sans the bells and whistles. A slew of them where I stay (E92nd) have had to shut their doors . It is really saddening.

That is a shame, Casi. And once the subway is complete, small businesses will have a really hard time affording the rent once it has skyrocketed.

Wonderful photos and your detailed info is fantastic htmb. You must have walked many miles. I have always given Chinatown a miss because I thought it was all about knock off designer handbags - so I got that very wrong ! Last time I stayed in Radio City apartments so your Rockefeller section really evoked some memories. I will certainly re visit this thread if I get to go to NYC again.

Thanks, Lugg! A look up the upper east side this morning. Christmas trees are gradually being collected by the sanitation department. Photo taken by my daughter, S.

She figures it's the other way around and would be irritated to find out I'd cropped her hastily photographed picture. Apartment living in a pre-WWII building has its "entertaining" aspects. The other day she experienced water pouring into her bathroom from above when a pipe broke, possibly due to a tenant's negligence. Apparently, the apartment below hers received even more damage, but it was certainly good S was home at the time to protect her things from the water. So far, this has meant a day of working from home while her bathroom ceiling was ripped out. More days at home surely to come.

S took several pictures of all the snow they've gotten today on the upper east side. These first three photos were taken this morning.

Almost all commercial establishments were shut down. The mayor finally convinced the theaters to close. There were a few mom and pop places open near S for at least some of the day. She didn't venture as far as the subway to see if it was running.

Sorry. When Bernie Sanders is sworn in, you need to go take pictures in NY again like you did for Obama's first inauguration. Thank you.

She was dressed very warmly. Has a great coat, but while crossing the wide Avenues the wind was absolutely brutal. At one point on my "tour," her phone got so cold it cut out and I thought, "oh well, now she's fallen face first into a snow drift."
S loves snow and was happy as a clam being out in it. Though I would have enjoyed the opportunity to take photos, I don't care for snow at all and was glad I was looking at the scene throgh my tablet.

Stunning photos. The jogging path in Central Park really captures the stillness and quietude of freshly fallen snow.
The city is so magical bathed in a winter wonderland. And then, the snow gets dirty, the slush ensues and it's an ugly mess.
I spoke with my brother this a.m. and they got about 2 feet out on Long Island. He said the winds were fierce (up to 50mph) and many lost power.
Please thank your daughter for getting out and sharing these pics with us.

Very pretty photos. Good for her for going out and about in this mess. I haven't stirred one foot outdoors and couldn't even bring myself to crack my window to take a picture. But I have work tomorrow, so I have no choice but to venture out in it. Sigh...

Who's Gracie Mansion? I kid, I kid. Those are very cool photos of the snow. It doesn't look like an "historic" storm to me, but it was surely a nice dump of snow. Kinda wish I were there when it fell; very glad i'm not there for the aftermath.
