Just catching up here with this magnificent montage.
(I did giggle at the thought of you on your back with legs wiggling....hee, hee hee...
If my memory serves me correctly, they were beginning restorations there in 2000, but, I may have it confused with one of the many other churches and mosques I visited.
In any event, simply gorgeous pics.
The thing I was blown away by during the whole time I spent in Istanbul was just how old everything was and so preciously preserved.

Thanks so much, Casimira. The present course of restoration was started in 2013, but there could very well have been restoration ongoing in 2000 as well. Hagia Sophia has parts under restoration right now, & might have 15 years ago also. It was not only the great age of everything that was awe-inspiring, but all the wars, earthquakes, changes of power, etc. that those things have sustained.
