Hi,
I am trying to remember an old French movie in b/w. It starts as follows. A sparsely attended burial party with only the pall bearers and a priest and the church bell tolling is the opening scene. Dong dong goes the bell and an elegant woman appears at the graveside with flowers. Now there is a flashback to when the dead man first met the elegant woman and their story. Dong dong goes the bell and another woman appears with another flashback. This continues until a picture of the dead man and his life and loves are pieced together.
I cannot remember who was in the movie or what it was called so I only remember the opening scene but it obviously had an effect on me.
Thanks to all who read this, more thanks to those who offer help and 1000 thanks to anyone who can name the movie.

The only movie I can come up with is L'Homme qui aimait les femmes by Truffaut. It dates from 1977 but it is in colour. It starts with his funeral, attended by the women he loved.
