It sure looks good now. You mentioned a few empty bottle thrown in by idiots as I was thinking if any more bikes would find their way there before refilling the canal. It seems that water covers tracks and hides a multitude of sins and is all the culprits are waiting for.....except for the impatient idiots

Well, because of the protective fences, it would take much more effort to get a bicycle in there at the moment compared to tossing a bottle.

Yep - didn't realize about the fences but that sounds reasonable.

All sections of the canal are now just about completely cleaned out. I suppose there will be a final sweep right at the end, because some detritus still manages to get in, especially things that can be blown by the wind (plastic bags) and a few that can be thrown over the fences. Why do people do that? I guess they must think that it is fun, as well as making them admirable anarchists.

Many thanks again Kerouac for this very interesting thread. I cannot wait to walk along there in April to see the finished article.
As for the drilling rig, perhaps there is oil, or better still, gold down there. Prosaically they may be installing some eqipment, or checking if there is an underlying lake caused by leakage from the canal.

I have found this thread fascinating. I would never have thought that a canal would be drained, cleaned and repaired in such a manner. Quite an interesting process. I wish I could visit this year to see the fresh results.

I've found this thread very interesting, too, and I'm wondering how clean the water will look once this part of the canal has reopened. It's good we'll have these photos for reference and comparison.
From looking at the photos, it seems the cleaning and repair has been very labor intensive.
It would be interesting to know why they were drilling.

They certainly are feverishly slogging away. It's quite hard to imagine it devoid of all the equipment and a guy raising his arm in a big thumbs up saying "Push the button Max!"

Funny how the work pace seems to escalate as jobs get closer to meeting deadlines.
Thanks for the update, Kerouac.

This has been quite a project! It will be nice to see once all the work has been completed and construction debris cleared away.

I'll bet the tourist companies, and the other boat owners who'd like to use the canal are beginning to get impatient.

They're probably ready to spit nails.

Considering what a big job that is, it's kind of a miracle that it's so far along, on schedule or not.
