I've just re-visited this fabulous thread (and Bixa's other thread about Sicily) as my daughter has just returned - she loved Sicily but she said she had never experienced such oppressive heat. I wondered if Bixa had visited some of the same places that my daughter did, but mainly the answer was no.
She stayed in Taormina , Syracuse and Catania
Anyway seeing these threads and my daughters photos has made me want to plan a visit, but it will definitely not be in the Summer months.

Thanks for the kind words, Lugg! Your daughter was on the eastern side of the island and, except for Ortygia, I stayed on the western side*. I flew into Palermo and out of Catania because I was heading east to Turkey.
It was hot there and hot in Turkey -- the kind of heat that almost provokes nausea. Apparently it was an exceptionally hot summer that year, with temperatures in the triple digits (Fahrenheit). Unfortunately, I think those kind of extremes have continued every year since.
*Visited Palermo, Cefalu, Trapani, & Ortygia.
