Winter has set in and I feel cold and wanting something hot and sweet. Mmmm...pudding! sponge pud with golden syrup or lemon with custard, Spotted dick or chocolate custard. Sticky date with coconut custard, butterscotch with caramel sauce...I can't make up my mind...what would YOU choose?

Questa I would choose sticky date with plain or coconut custard - Mr. Tod would only pick plain sponge pudding made with golden syrup and top it off with plain vanilla custard. But where o where would I find these divine puds here?? Long long ago when I was a teenager we stayed with my aunt for two years because of schooling. During this time we often got Wareings Sponge puddings from a can. They were fantastic.

I love going to the Balinese group's picnic feasts here. Many of the group are professional chefs and all Balinese seem to be fabulous cooks. When the desserts get put out there is a mighty rush for the sticky date with coconut custard. I cheat as I am not a good cook...I do the packet version which all gets eaten anyway.

Looks like I have excellent taste Questa! Oh how blissful it would be to find a packet version of any of them.....but I do have my packet Malva pudding on standby! It's nothing compared to the version made at a restaurant down our South Coast. They do little individual ones that are literally to die for. Soft, plump, spongy and sweet. The nearest thing to a Rhum Baba made at the Train Bleu in Paris.

I love, love custards and puddings. They serve as comfort food for me.
I never got around to making the fig clafouti I had planned to. Although the fig tree has a gazillion figs, they are not sweet or even close to tasting like they should. The reason being all the rain that we have been having has made them soggy and mushy. All my friends with fig trees have said the same.

Here, of course, it is boreal summer, but not particularly hot today. Fresh strawberries; raspberries aren't quite ready yet. If friends were coming over I'd get some kind of unfrosted cake or pastry and open my longstanding tin of maple syrup.
The strawberries are delicious, not too big.

I love how all those Latvian desserts seem so old-fashioned and homey.

I almost never have dessert, but an overwhelming urge 3 hours after dinner made me prepare a bowl of vanilla ice cream with sliced mangos in syrup. I am now sated.
