It's a shame to say this, but the fact that she doesn't look black and has straight (straightened?) hair is probably a political advantage for quite a bit of the non black community. It’s possible she got her sleek black hair from her Indian mother, and her not-very-Black father’s kinky hair genes were overwhelmed.

Whenever a woman came into a prominent position in politics here, the media was soon criticised for just reporting on what she wore, her hair-do, who her parents were and where she came from, how was she going to combine looking after the children with work or if no kids, why not?
Policies, people, POLICIES ! What are her plans for the betterment of the country, anti or for abortion, Trade or war with China, How to undo 4 years of total mismanagement.
This is her job, not sharing her favourite recipes etc. I thought that anyporters were above this sort of discrimination. For homework you can read Misogyny

Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission is a doctor with 7 kids. It was rarely mentioned when she got her current job. I should think that becoming a politcian, with her other occupations, should be seen as a qualification.

Of course I would never ask Dr Von der Leyen why she didn't stop at two, but it would give me pause and make me think she might be a religious nutcase. And I'd think exactly the same of a highly educated man with such a brood.

I am actually curious about the speech that Melania Trump will give at the RNC. I am not curious about any of the other speakers.

Good luck with that, Kerouac. I watched all of the Democratic Convention - the good and the not so good - and had planned to watch the Republicans, but I just can’t bring myself to turn on the TV. Maybe I’ll catch a replay of Melania’s speech, but I find the whole family, their enablers and their message, utterly repulsive and scary as hell.

Melania had actually heard about covid-19 and what it did to the United States. That was certainly innovative. I don't think she even called it the "Chinese virus." Of course, saying that her husband should be reelected was total crap.

I’ve been watching the RMC tonite, and am struck by how the speakers seem to be in an alternate reality dream world.
Most of the traits and visions they attribute to Republicans and DJT seem to be more representative of today’s Democrats and Joe Biden.
So much bullzhit, speaker after speaker.
Fact-checkers can’t keep up with all the lies and misrepresentations. Throwing red meat to Trump’s base. Giving white people justification for thinking they aren’t racist if they vote for him....
I think I’ll go puke.

More power to you, Kimby -- I can't stomach watching those people, although giving a quick look is something akin to gaping as you pass a wreck on the highway.
I watched a few seconds of Don Jr.'s orangutan-armed girlfriend bellowing into the mike. My gawd -- none of those bimbos (& by bimbos, I include the men) have anything behind the eyeballs.

Since I live in a red state, I have friends and acquaintances who have different political leanings than I do, so I try to figure out how they are thinking both to be better informed and to be a better friend. But this RNC is going above and beyond. Urp!

He is saying Harris is not competent. Why, how doeshe form this reflexion ? I suppose he doesnt need to build a coherent thinking. He just knows.
I liked a remark from CNN : if Trump is attacking like this now, what is it going to be 2 weeks before election ?

Huh? But he's a birther. He has needled not only Obama but also Harris with this shit. Melania is NOT eligible according to US law. She was born in the Yugoslavian socialist republic; was Slovenian after its breakup.

Ivanka must be 35 by now, and probably born in the US. (I didn't check).

So, the first debate is tonight. I don't have the slightest idea how many debates are scheduled, but have the first one more than a month before the election implies to me that more than two are planned.
I will be sound asleep when this happens.

I suspect they're going to pump Biden with some kind of medication to keep him both awake and coherent. Something like Adderall or something similar. They have to. He's not going to be able to perform with any kind of competence or mental acuity without it. I think I heard but can't remember where or who from that Trump is requesting that each of them undergo a drug test beforehand. The long and short of it though is that there are not that many undecided voters so there a few who might be swayed but likely not enough to make that much of a difference.

I am so glad that all of this happens well past my bed time, even though I doubt that I would be able to stand watching more than 5 minutes of it.
Then again, Trump might sign one of his executive orders to ban the other fake news debates.

As you can imagine, the world media were not really impressed by the debate.
In French debates, there is a timer for the maximum time allowed for each person to speak. Their microphone is cut off if ever they exceed their allotted time. Frankly, I have never seen this happen in a debate because the participants are very much aware of the risks, but it happens very often in parliament where people are cut off if they exceed two minutes.
