The Czech government has decided that they don't want to call their country the Czech Republic anymore, although they will not take steps to change anything official in the EU documents.
However, henceforth English speakers are supposed to call the country Czechia, French speakers Tchéquie, German speakers Tschechien, Spanish speakers Chequia, etc. As for the Czechs themselves, they have always called their country Cesko.
Anyport has had 1,013 visitors from Czechia since 2009.

When I think of all the scolding I used to get years ago for using the term 'Czechia' on the old Thorn Tree Forum...

I did read that some Czechs (Czechians?) are against it because they think their country will be confused with Chechnya.

I've often heard the country called Tchéquie in French.
Roll out old jokes about cancelled Czechs.

I've never used another word than Tchéquie in French. Afteer 'Tchécoslovaquie' was no more admitted.

Me too, but the media always said and wrote "République Tchèque."

I did read that some Czechs (Czechians?) are against it because they think their country will be confused with Chechnya. Funny enough I used to find that Czechs had little problem with the term but outsiders used to get a little excited about it on their behalf. Plus ca change, I suppose...

Considering the fact that some people still manage to mix up Austria and Australia, one just has to assume that there are plenty of dyslexic people.

That's a kind interpretation. I would have said ignorant. Apparently many people think New Mexico is a foreign country. I wonder where they think New England is. Roll out old jokes about cancelled Czechs. And don't forget loud checks ~

See? The new name will eliminate all of the lame jokes.
(Just for the record, the Lorraine/Alsace region used to be called Austrasie in Merovingian times -6th century- and that name nearly returned as "Nouvelle Austrasie" when the regions were merged this year, but luckily we people of the region voted for Grand Est instead in the referendum, so you can also say goodbye to the former regions of Alsace, Lorraine, Champagne and Ardennes in France. Maybe only for 50 or 100 years, of course until the next change.)
