It appears that there is a legislative move to eliminate the need for tipping in England, just like France did 30 years ago. Really, it makes things so much simpler! Tipping comes off the menu.

I only scanned the article but I don't think it will really eliminate tipping - it will just stop restaurants etc. adding a discretionary service charge to the bill; which often goes unnoticed by some who then may even give an additional tip . If I do tip I always ask - How is this shared? Where does it go etc? and always pay it quite separately to the bill. Has all tipping completely stopped in France ?

Yeah, what Lugg said.
Even though as a well-trained American I wanted to compulsively tip in France, I understand and applaud its method of paying service workers a decent wage and granting them the dignity of not needing gratuities.

Has all tipping completely stopped in France ? Unfortunately we still allow foreigners into the country and they do all sorts of weird things. Most of the French only round a bill up to the next euro, if that.

Individually restaurants have tried a no-tipping policy in BC, but they've all abandoned it. Quote from a restauranteur:
People are such sheep.

As the world becomes more and more mixed with people from different cultures -- tipping societies, non-tipping societies, very little-tipping societies -- it seems to me that some day restaurant workers will demand a guaranteed living wage when they live in a country that doesn't provide one. Then, if a bit of tipping continues, it really will be to reward people for exceptional service and not just because they put a plate of food that somebody else cooked in front of a customer.
