Paris started its own techno parade in 1998, and that is almost certainly the last time I saw it in person. It was a copy of Berlin's Love Parade which existed from 1989 to 2010. The Love Parade in Berlin has been replaced by the Fuckparade (I'm not making this up), and the only other remaining "rival" is the Street Parade in Zürich, which was created in 1992. Both of those are bigger than the Techno Parade, which is still not too shabby wth 350,000 participants. All of the other electronic music parades have died, and most of them existed only in the first decade of the 21st century -- Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Geneva, Basel, Rotterdam, Budapest, Vienna, San Francisco... all gone. Many places still have electronic music festivals but no frolicking in the streets.
Just like every other event held in Paris this year, the Techno Parade was reduced in size this year for security reasons. It only covered 2.5km instead of the usual 5km because the authorities felt it was necessary for police presence to be very dense rather than stretched out.
Anyway, I wasn't doing anything this afternoon, so I decided to take a look at it. All of the metro stations along the route were closed, so I walked up to it from the Quai de la Rapée.
My timing was pretty good, because the parade was just arriving at the same point as I from the opposite direction.
This year the Tunisian sound truck had the honour of leading the parade.
Tunisia has a major techno culture and created the Dunes Electroniques festival last year near the old Star Wars décor near the village of Tatouine.
One of the sponsors is the techno radio station of Paris, FG. It was originally created as Fréquence Gaie, evolved to Future Génération and is now just Radio FG.
They have to spread out the sound trucks because of the noise. They are at least 300 metres apart.
Today's weather was perfect for a parade: sunny and 25°.
