Yesterday I felt my throat was 'scratchy' and within hours felt awful. My chest tickles and I just want to lie down. Usually the symptoms worsen and the last time I got this it took three months to clear up. My husband is not sympathetic as he suggested I change into a dry shirt after being soaked to the skin whilst walking to the train station in Wilderwil a few days ago. I knew it would dry as the fabric was totally synthetic but it was pretty cold as well. Do you think people get sick from exposure to wet & cold? Or was I infected anyway...

You were probably infected by someone else, though being out in the wet, cold weather would most certainly have made you feel worse. Hope you feel better soon!
Keep warm, drink floods of hot tea with honey and lemon - add a shot of something more "medicinal" if you want to open your chest - aspirin or something similar would help.
I swear by essential oil of peppermint, mixing it with a little oil and rubbing my neck and chest. If you can get someone to rub your back with it, that's a good idea, too. Then, go to bed and try to sleep.
If you don't feel better in a few days, you should probably give in and see a doctor.

Jolly good advise thanks! I do have some little flakes (white ) which you are supposed to disolve in hot water then breath in the steam. So far my chest has stopped the tickle but that could be from the medication. I have spent all day in bed watching TV and dozing off. Just came into the study for a break and to start making a macaroni & cheese for dinner. Here I am really going the cheats route and using store bought fresh cheese sauce. I'm not the only one that's not 100% - just noticed Patch our Staffie has lost a lot of hair on her one rump. My husband will rush her to the vet when he comes home. I'm sure it's mange as she smells bad too.

I'm not much into natural remedies, but I swear by oil of oregano. In pill form. A sore throat is dreaded by singers and actors, but I find it can be kept at bay with nice big doses. Of course, you're burping pizza all day long...

I hope you feel better soon, Tod. It's lucky you didn't become ill while traveling.

I do believe that all if not most of the aforementioned sage advice does apply but, depending on the severity of your symptoms and lest they exacerbate you may need to seek some type of homeopathic, herbal or traditional medicinal advice and or treatment. Do take care please and safe keeping.

tod2 - it's also a good idea to gargle with warm salt water or a medicinal mouthwash, a couple of times a day.

Yes, the salt water is even recommended by doctors and pharmacies. Rikita - It may be worth getting your throat checked by a doctor. I say this because when in my 20's I ended up seeing the doctor about a recurring sore throat. They found I had a small growth?/maybe ulcer?... can't remember it's so long ago, but admitted me to a day ward and surgically removed it. It was hiding behind my 'little tongue' (that oval=shaped thing you see when opening your moth wide). It seemed to cure the throat. Later in my 60's I found I could not get rid of my burning throat - the doctor took one look and said I had got it from stomach acid. Reflux is the devil.

yeah i asked a doctor about it recently. she only had a short look inside and couldn't see anything, except that it was a little red, but said i could get an ultrasound of the area (i think that is what she said) - she thought it might be the thyroid or something like that, if i remember right - problem is i just haven't found the time for an appointment for that yet, but am planning to ...

Rikita, could allergies be contributing to your sore throat?

i don't know, i have allergies i think that make me sneeze at times or make my nose run - but not sure if and how they could make my throat sore ...

If your sinuses are draining down the back of your throat it can make your throat sore. Just a thought.

My throat feels better but my nose is running like a freight train. I suffer badly with Post-nasal drip. At night it helps me to take a tablet that dries up the nasal passages. Even Allergex helps. That's an over the counter hystermine pill. I also squirt a nasal spray into the nostrils but not on a regular basis. That is not good. I wish I wasn't so lazy and did a routine morning and evening 'flushing out' the passages with a warm saline solution. It's in the cupboard just sitting on the shelf. I need to be told off!

does the nose flushing work for you? i tried it for a while, but unless my nose is so clear it does not really need it, it just won't come out on the other side. tried it lots of times, had people look if i am holding my head right and everything ... i suppose my nose is weird ...

tod2 - have you tried to find out what you are allergic to? Would it be possible to eliminate or reduce whatever it is in your environment?

Chex - No, I haven't and not really thought I am allergic to any specific thing. I have had the Post-Nasal drip since high school. I can remember sitting in the doctors surgery inhaling penicillin in a gas form. Ghastly! Well that may have worked for a while but on the whole when it gets really bad I take a pill. I think it is seasonal too. We are right slap bang in the middle of spring. Lots of flowers and trees bursting out.

Sounds like there's not much you can do about pollen except take some medication. I have been feeling tired and low-spirited all week - woke up this morning with flu-like symptoms. This always happens just before the flu shots become available

A tonic may be good. Just something simple like a effervescent Vit.B etc. booster. If you were in South Africa you could get a Neurobion injection for an instant kick start.

For sore throats, gargle with soluble aspirin dissolved in warm water. For head colds, menthol crystals dissolved in a bowl full of boiling water, a towel over the head and bowl, inhale the vapour and cough. In my flying days if one visited the sick quarters any morning one would see several people sat round a table with towels over their heads which were bent over the table..

I bought menthol crystals only a month before going on holiday. My son had a bad bout of 'flu and these crystals were recommended. Mossie I think you must be talking about Disprin - that soluble aspirin. Excellent advice.

Steam definitely helps. I try to hover over the coffeemaker every morning at the end of its cycle when it sends up clouds of steam. However, it's more practical to keep one of those nasal spritz bottles on hand to irrigate your nostrils with plain saline solution. I never thought about dissolving aspirin in water for gargling, but it's an excellent idea. When I feel the scratchy throat coming on I gargle with hydrogen peroxide. For the chest tickle or the beginnings of a cough, mix well-crushed garlic with honey and take as much of it as you can as often as you can.
