Do you take any? I try to take calcium supplements since I am somewhat at risk for osteoperosis, but I am pretty bad about it. I will take one for a while and then forget. Other stuff like a multivitamin I am usually the same way, and am not sure it really makes any difference.
However, I was feeling a bit run down, so about a week ago, on impulse, I bought some women's multivitamin that was being promoted at the pharmacy. For whatever reason, I notice I am not having that worn out feeling since I started taking it. Yesterday I felt kind of blah and tired again and I realized I hadn't taken the vitamin.
Is the vitamin having an effect, is it the placebo effect as discussed in another post, or something else? I don't know, strange, but at least I am not feeling like I want to nap all the time.

If you are receiving proper nutrition, I don't see how vitamin supplements could be necessary. I don't believe in overdoing vitamins.

It's one thing to overdo vitamins, another to take a reasonable multi-vitamin supplement.
Even if you eat a completely balanced diet all the time, there are environmental and personal assimilation factors that might keep you from extracting and using all the vitamins in your diet.

In general I eat pretty well. This multivitamin/mineral seems pretty reasonable, for most stuff it has about 50-100% of the recommendation. Those that have like 2000% of everthing do seem like overkill.

I take a time release B-Complex with C and a Calcium Supplement daily. When I run out and don't take for a few days and then resume I definetely feel a difference.

Vitamins came up as a subject on another thread -- take or not take, how many, what kind, etc. Coincidentally, I had just been in a conversation with my sister about hair care She mentioned that she was concerned that the part of hair that was white seemed to have a yellow cast. I asked her if she took vitamin B supplements, as I'd heard that was one side effect of them. She laughed & said that yes, she took enough that she had very expensive pee. I've also heard that if you're peeing bright yellow because of vitamin supplement intake, it means you don't need those supplements. I don't know if this is true or not. This is why I take a time released Bcomplex with C. Otherwise it's a total waste of time and money. Also, the fat soluble vitamins, A, D and E, one has to be careful in taking. If you take too many mgs. of them they store up in the fat and can cause a lot of complications.
My Calcium supplement I have to force myself to take. It's so huge a pill I have difficulty swallowing it. Otherwise known as a "horse pill".

Anyway, you just pee out excess vitamins and other supplements. Probably not the best thing for the environment.

I have been taking calcium pills + vitamin D to assimilate it for a few years now. I do have osteoporosis but the original medicine prescribed for it contained hormones that gave me terrible migraines. The doctor told me that exercise plus the pills (not horse pills, just lemon flavoured pills to suck on) should keep my bones from getting too fragile. Even though I eat dairy products and healthy things, the doctor said there was not enough calcium for someone like me just from diet.
I went for a bone density test last December and the bone loss hadn't gotten worse since the previous test, although I'm still in the "red zone".

It's been many years since I have taken a Vitamin pill, mostly because I forgot a lot of the time and they went out of date. But I do take Neurobion - High Volt.Vit B tablets. Only because my sciatic nerve has been giving me a sore back. I used to go for the injection but the pharmacies have stopped offering the service. As for calcium - No. My kidneys are too old to cope with more calcium than I may need. I think my diet in milk, cheese etc. is sufficient. I found this statement on advice about calcium. "Too much calcium in your blood can weaken your bones, create kidney stones, and interfere with how your heart and brain work". Some months ago I decided to clear out my medicine cabinet:   |

Jeez.
In my medicine cabinet, which I don't have, it's part of a shelf on the pantry, I have one packet of high blood pressure tablets, a car first aid kit, a packet of plasters and three kinds on antibiotic/disinfectant creams for the numerous cuts, bangs and scrapes I get on my hands when I'm 'doin' stuff'.
Either I'm pretty lucky healthwise or I'm going to die (relatively) young.

I don't have a medicine cabinet either -- a box in a drawer that only contains anything because of the lousy French habit of selling medicine by box or bottle instead of the exact amount the doctor prescribes. So if the doc says, "Take 2 a day for 6 days", you end up with 2 boxes of 10 pills, of which 8 are left over. It keeps the pharmaceutical industry happy but creates a ton of waste. And the sell-by date is really long on these medicines.
Every once in a while I go through what's left and take any outdated meds back to the drugstore. Otherwise, we just have some bandaids and headache pills, along with whatever is in there waiting to expire.

If you guys are surprised , I might tell you so was I, to see how much came out of my cupboard. Not all of it is medication. I found a lot of cosmetics. 70% was stuff I'd kept but never got around to using, some of it out of date. I always had kids medicines in abundance as we babysat a lot and a lot of times the kids came down with something in the middle of the night.
Only yesterday my eldest grandson showed me a bleeding finger so we came into the cupboard to find a plaster. When he saw I could lay my hands on an entire selection in a box, he praised me ( dear boy) for having plasters to put on his finger. Then said they did not have any at his dads house……So I gave him a new box to take home.
Now the story gets interesting.
About 8pm that evening my husband comes into the bedroom and says "I'm just asking, but is there any reason why we have a large box of Elastoplast in the fridge?" Oh shit - I remember offering my grandson some chocolate bars to take home. In order to carry them he must have put the plaster box down on the fridge shelf…….Never mind my boy there is always a next time!

One of the many insults menopause inflicts on the female body is hair-thinning.
I started taking Biotin (5000mcg) and within weeks my hair FELT noticeably nicer: smoother, softer, and looked nicer too, shinier and “swingy”. I’m assuming the quality of my natural scalp oil has been improved somehow, smoothing the cuticle.
Even without a notable increase in thickness, I’m happy with the changes that have occurred. I also tried collagen, but noticed no difference so stopped it.
Anyone else taking vitamins for hair (and or skin)?
