Group report created by kerouac2 (who due to a glitch is the "Deleted" in this presentation) The Catedral Metropolitana de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María a los cielos or Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is the largest cathedral in the Western Hemisphere and was practically built on the site of an Aztec temple, because that's the sort of thing the Spanish liked to do to show that they had taken control. Construction started in 1573 and lasted two centuries, because the mucky subsoil was a real problem. Nevertheless, it has survived floods, fires and earthquakes, so builders did a pretty good job.

Very ornate, and must have used up most of the world's supply of gilt

Kerouac and Htmb have already done such a beautiful job of covering the cathedral that at first I feared adding my pictures would be too much duplication. But really, the cathedral, both inside and out, is so elaborate and varied that more coverage is not a bad thing. Anyway, here goes ~

Worthy additions to the report, bixa. This lplace makes even the most, baroque, over the top Italian cathedral look positively spartan.

Totally OTT, I don't understand the place. I greatly prefer the interior scenes to those of the exterior. Although we have been to the Zócalo many times, I don't recall ever stepping inside the Catedral.

Thank you, Fumobici, kind sir.
Looking at my own pictures and those of my companions was a revelation to me. That's because everything DOES look over the top and incredibly elaborate in the photos. Okay, admittedly there is a jaw-dropping amount of gold, carving, statues, curly-cues, etc. etc. etc. But really, the place is so huge that, when seen in toto, the individual OTT parts seem less overwhelming and even appropriately in proportion.
