Hmmm... even though my account is locked, I can still copy a photo from my public albums (thank god a few of them are public!).

For a long time I couldn't access any of my albums even with password but I check from time to time and yesterday I went straight into all my albums even without password. Hope I get time to move much of it if it isn't locked again. Trouble is I can only do it at work at present and have very limited time.

Now that there seems to be a way to retrieve Photobucket pictures (which I never used), I am wondering if those who do know how to do might possibly retrieve the treasure trove of HWNP's pictures. It seems only fitting that given all his contributions he be properly represented.
What do folks think about this and can it be done or not?

Casimira, HW used Flickr and I believe all of his picture threads are intact. Prompted by your question, I went to his profile & looked up his last posts. The last one was written on July 29, 2012 and ended with the words, "Thanks, Bixa".

Of late I have done a lot of browsing of old threads and thought I ran across a few of HW's that had that awful message from PB. After a few I didn't look much further and am glad to hear and see that most of his pics are still with us. What a heart wrenching feeling that surely must have swept over you Bixa reading that last post (it did me when I read it.) That was the HW we knew and loved.

A lot of the grey squares in various threads are due to the disappearance of the first set of smileys. Every now and then I edit a post here or there to put the smiley back because the grey squares injure my eyes.

I received a contrite message from Photobucket today telling me that blocked photos "have been restored for a limited time" and proposing new payment plans much cheaper than before. There was also a "we listened to you" statement.

Yeah, well ~ all is not forgiven. Photobucket knows what it can do with its contrition. Humph.

Are the pictures on here restored then? Mick, a week or so ago many p'bkt pictures started showing back up in ruined threads. Who knows how long this will last. I'm not sorry that I renovated some of my threads they ruined & will continue doing so. They've already proved that they can't be trusted.

I'm not saying that anybody should go back to them, but I am a bit pleased that they did realise that they made a horrible, horrible mistake.

Has anybody heard from Photobucket lately? I noted that most of my hostage pics have been showing again with watermark, but I was not prepared for this... Final Notice of Account Restriction Due to Exceeding Your Free Storage Limit YOUR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION IS REQUIRED! You are currently using 3GB of image storage. Effective Saturday, March 2, 2019, your account will be limited to 2.5GB (approximately 250 images). This means that after this date, you will not be able to add photos to your account and must either delete or download images to meet the free plan limit. What You Must Do For either $4.48 (monthly option) or $48.38 (discounted annual option), you will get 25GB of storage (room for approximately 2,500 images), plus watermark free image hosting, use of our new state of the art image editor, among other features. Then follows a choice of month or annual payments. I copied this address mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?tab=wm#inbox/FMfcgxwBVqTdbwncSrZLkgzhMbpvTqrW for what it is worth. It was printed in red and I am wondering if it is a scam or a chance to get our pics back.

My information when I log in is just "you have used 100% of your storage" and of course I'm offered the same plan as you for paying their ransom. But I was a paying customer for years (when the price was reasonable), so I will probably get a special threat a bit later.

Post by questa on Feb 28, 2019 23:34:04 GMT
Well, I paid the ransom and all my photos are neatly in their albums and ready for me to look at. As I had kept the originals anyway the albums are really only the pics I had used to illustrate a travel report i.e. pick of the bunch. What really hurt was not being able to see others' posts.
After screaming headlines telling me I was over the limit, turns out I have used 29% of my allowance.
I have been reluctant to post pics with other sites, but now I may catch up with some stories.

Oh....I didnt realise it's only temporary. I use Flickr now, almost all of the photos on PB are already saved on disc so if they change their mind then I have copies. If they DO change back and withdraw support for message board posts then I'll probably empty then delete my PB account. I haven't loaded any new pics onto PB since 2017.

Photobucket Hosting is not allowed. Upgrade Today store up to 25,000 photos with unlimited hosting for only $5 Purchase Now or lock in your savings for a full year. If you decide not to upgrade, you will need to immediately login and stop hosting images.
I don't know what that final threat means, so for the moment have not logged into my account. If you click on the "Purchase Now" button, you get taken to a login page that also says:
Order Details Intermediate Plan - Monthly $7.99 Discount INTERMEDIATE4FIVE4THREE -$3.00 Total $4.99 Have a Promo Code?
Once subscribed, you will be billed the discounted amount of $4.99 per month for 3 months, and then the price will increase to $7.99 per month.
Note the usual encouraging words about cancelling are missing. I dug though their Terms of Use (accessible from payment page) & found this:
When you subscribe to a Paid Account, you authorize Photobucket to charge you using your selected payment method for all applicable fees. Thereafter, Photobucket will automatically charge your credit card monthly or annually, as applicable, unless you notify us that you want to cancel or disable auto-renewal prior to the next renewal.
The rest of the TOS mostly spells out the fact that Photobucket holds all the cards & will change the rules as it pleases. It also contains this chilling threat:
PHOTOBUCKET SHALL, IN ITS SOLE DISCRETION, DETERMINE EXCESSIVE BANDWIDTH USAGE AND SHALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO IMPOSE THROTTLING WHENEVER IT DEEMS IT APPROPRIATE TO DO SO. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess what I will do is to go ahead and sign up, then begin the process of moving any photos I want out of Photobucket. If I can do that in one month, it will only cost me five bucks.
Thoughts from the rest of you?

My renewal date is in September, and the credit card they have on file has expired, so I am going to wait and see what happens for the moment. They have already vandalised my photos anyway. But will they disappear completely? That's what I want to know.

Read their TOS. As far as I can tell, they do not delete our photographs. But can they be trusted? I will again point out that it is in our power to renovate our threads. The instructions start in reply #4 in this thread, which remarks, refinements, etc. in the posts following. What I don't know is whether or not that method will still work after this most recent demand. We could be locked out of our accounts or even the pictures with the hated logo across them will be removed from threads.

An alternative is to get your own domain and hosting, that's what I do. It is admittedly not for the profoundly techphobic but it also isn't terribly difficult. It costs roughly the same as joining an image hosting service and you are in *total* control of your not only your photo files but all other files and content you upload to it. Storage appears to be truly unlimited and you'll never be blindsided by or held ransom to demands that if you don't pay a bribe to the hoster you'll have all the photos you've posted taken down or defaced. I think photo hosting services, being the good capitalists they are and knowing that once joined they hold your digital lives in their hands, will inevitably succumb to the temptation to hold you hostage for profit. Not that web hosters aren't as well but there are a ton more alternatives for general web hosting than big photo hosting sites, so you have a lot more leverage and control with them. If your web hoster gets greedy and bumps up your rate, you have dozens of good alternatives—something lacking in the image hosting space—and it's pretty straightforward to move all your files to a different host. A big added bonus is that if you have your own domain, it means the image URLs will always remain the same no matter which host you move to so every photo you've ever posted/hotlinked to will forever be protected from the whims of a for-profit photo hoster who can break your image links at will. Changing photo hosting services will 100% of the time break every photo you've ever previously posted/hotlinked to, and you can bet the image hosters know that and exploit that vulnerability at some point shake you down for money.

Perhaps Anyport could open its own photo hosting site then. Bixa? I certainly wouldn't mind paying for that.

Look into it if you wish, Kerouac. There are a myriad of ways/sites to host pictures and getting ones own domain is definitely a good avenue. Be that as it may, this is the PHOTOBUCKET PROBLEMS thread. My goal in posting the email I received from Pbucket is to alert others of the possibility of losing access to their photos posted there, in the event they wish to deal with that. As a person who has never paid for Photobucket & whose pictures are held hostage there, that is all that concerns me -- not whether someone else is paid up, trusts them or not, blah blah blah. There is an entire thread devoted to photo hosting in general: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/4890/photo-host-site-use-recommendI am re-posting the pertinent information, such as it is, about paying 5--15 bucks in order to regain full access to whatever one has hosted on Photobucket. The line at the end about "thoughts from the rest of you" is to solicit useful thoughts and suggestions specific to this subject. I am assuming that others received this email from Photobucket, but if not ~ Do you want to keep your photos? Manage your account. Inbox
