This is an extract of a Newsweek interview with Zim's Minister of Finance www.newsweek.com/id/181221. Astounding really! Your critics blame your monetary policies for Zimbabwe's economic problems. I've been condemned by traditional economists who said that printing money is responsible for inflation. Out of the necessity to exist, to ensure my people survive, I had to find myself printing money. I found myself doing extraordinary things that aren't in the textbooks. Then the IMF asked the U.S. to please print money. I began to see the whole world now in a mode of practicing what they have been saying I should not. I decided that God had been on my side and had come to vindicate me.

Hmmm. I can't find the interview, Palesa.
However, reading the quote in your post, all I could think was, "crazy like a fox".

This is so grotesque that it's like something out of a comedy film ............. except this is deadly unfunny.

Last night we were having a discussion about politicians, particularly our Jacob Zuma, who, unless there is a major upset, will be inaugurated as the President of our country this year. He is facing corruption charges and will be on trial while he is president of our country. We all know that he is guilty, he has admitted it by saying "Others were involved, I am small fry", so no matter how big or small, he is guilty of corruption.
He then stood up outside court yesterday and said, "I will not step down as president of the ANC, that would be admitting guilt and I am not guilty".
Long background to get to my point, sorry.
Now, when politicians stand up and lie, do they believe their lies, are they delusional, or do they think that the public are gullible?
Does the Zim finance minister REALLY believe that drivel that comes from his mouth?

At that level of arrogance -- which is really psychotic -- you have to believe that he's buying into it. There is no way to explain it by normal standards. Either that, or his grandiosity allows him to believe that he deserves his power and position, and that everyone else is just ordained by destiny to serve his means.

I have a nice little stash of New Yorkers which I've not yet read. I opened one this evening & saw this article. It's a long article, & there's a place to click on the first page to view it as one piece. You can also click on Print above the picture if you prefer to read it as hard copy. www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/10/27/081027fa_fact_anderson( Letter from Zimbabwe The Destroyer Robert Mugabe and the destruction of Zimbabwe by Jon Lee Anderson
