So the impeachment begins - it appears to be a lost cause so far

The House managers seem prepared and extremely qualified. They are constitutional scholars and very good, if not great, orators. Forty-five’s attorneys, on the other hand, appeared ill-prepared in their opening yesterday and very lacking.
The House managers have sixteen hours, over the next two days, to make their case. Afterwards, the defense will have the same amount of time. Whether or not enough Republican Senators have the guts to convict remains to be seen. I suspect most will be too afraid of their constituents, and fear future loss of their Senate seats. Pathetic.

What would be good would be if each senator were obliged to fully explain the reason for his/her vote for or against impeachment.

The opening video was chilling... Thanks Kimby - I had to copy and paste into another browser to view but that was successful. Chilling and very painful to watch.

I found it not so much chilling as terrifying. Even though I've watched so many videos of the events of January 6, this impeachment exhibit really brought home the horror of what happened, especially since we could hear (or read in captions) what the mob was saying. After viewing all those videos of the intruders just milling aimlessly in the Senate chamber -- videos simultaneously outrageous and boring -- having the full murderous entitlement of that mob so graphically displayed in the exhibit video really brings home how crucial this impeachment is. This Atlantic article was published the day after the attack on the Capitol. I think it captures what we all were seeing and feeling when viewing those first reports of what happened.

I completely approve of the fact that CNN has been playing the various videos uncensored. If all of the fucks were beeped out, there wouldn't be much to hear.

From "The Tarriers" c 1962
Q. "Should I write a letter to my Congressman?"
A. "Each Congressman has two ends, a sitting end and a thinking end, and since his success depends upon his seat, Why bother, Friend?"

I am completely devastated. Trump organised a party and Melania didn't show up. Rumours of separation float again. Gasp. Sigh.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here feeling deep fury and disgust. And you're right, Mick. It's no surprise. This time around I didn't even hold out any hope.

I watched the summing up...then started to lose faith. I'm so sorry for my American chums. Sorry for all of us really. It's confirmed my opinion about most politicians being self serving and corrupt. It's so depressing...

If he really believes this, Why TF didn’t he vote to convict? Well, he did leave out the teeny tiny detail that he made sure that the trial could not commence before the Inciter-in-Chief left office. Pelosi excoriated him with that fact in her remarks taking the shithook Republican Senators to task. Thanks -- I think -- for that link on Trump's statement. He lives to incite another day. 😡

He lives to incite another day. 😡 But that would be a criminal offence, and the jury would not be worrying about facing a primary. Any more "Nice place you got here, shame if anything happened to it" tactics would be much more risky. But I think he knows that, and anyway, he's more interested in what would get money out of his fans. My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

Besides the numerous civil charges being filed against him, including two cases of rape, the creep may also face criminal/civil charges in the states of Georgia and New York. I predict he will also face criminal charges related to the insurrection at some point. I’m hoping I can avoid hearing his name for awhile.
I have to sing the praises of the Senator from Casimira’s state who voted for impeachment, along with the six other Republicans. For listening carefully to the case evidence, and doing what he thought best for the country, that Senator was immediately censured by his State Republican Party.
It’s all so very disappointing. Never in my life have I made a donation to someone running for office in another state, but this year I felt compelled to donate to the Georgia campaigns of both Warnock and Ossoff because I was so disgusted with their opponents. Not that I’m all that thrilled with the Democratic Party either. I’m absolutely sick and tired of politicians who put themselves and their positions of power first, before country and before the people.

I think Trump won’t run himself in 2024, but definitely wants to pick WHO WILL. He wants to be a kingmaker, while he moves on to his new Patriot Party or his new Trump Media Empire.
But he isn’t taking into account that he may be tied up for years with lawsuits in NY and GA and DC. And may be in prison before Election Day 2024 rolls around.
Plus, Trump’s defense pretty much threw his insurrectionist supporters under the bus. Whether they will turn on him is yet to be revealed.

Well stated HTMB. I was thrown off by Senator Cassidy's vote but definitely pleased. It's not often that (other than New Orleans) Louisiana votes for anything with a conscience.

I don't agree with you, Patrick. What Kimby wrote in #2637 seems a pretty accurate reading of Trump's vision for the future along with a helping of reality.
But I doubt the really crazy and violent part of Trump's base cares anything about what his defense said, although they might turn away from their Great Leader later, for some other reason.

US senators have just proven to the world that US is a banana republic, and that they, senatirs, behave like sheep : no need of them, they just fillow bkindly the leader, shutting down their brains and liberty of expressing their opinion. A sad day for us all.

Lots of chatter in the local news about Republican Senator Bill Cassidy's vote of Trump being guilty. He was immediately censured by his party and told he won't receive a warm welcome home. Listening to him being interviewed he stood by his convictions and didn't feel that he had betrayed his constituents. I admire his outspokenness and conviction. Attributes I don't believe I would ever apply to any Republican.
