It appears that the RN will have 3 senators. Not very dangerous yet, but that doesn't stop them from being esctatic.

It is more than a bit interesting! I found it riveting in terms of clearly and fairly presenting not only the different points of view, but also the reasoning behind them.

Today President Macron announced that he intends to have the French constitution changed to make abortion rights irreversible. This is a complicated process, but at least it is supported by 77% of the French and none of the major political parties oppose it, not even Marine Le Pen. There is probably no need to actually put this in the constitution, but so many people were so outraged by what the United States did that it seemed appropriate.
The next item will be the right to die, but this is a touchier subject. Since Macron is not popular, he might not dare to put this on the table. Studies have been made by the government for several years showing that it is the right thing to do and that most people are in favour of it (78%), but depending on how such a law would be worded, it could make the whole subject explode. ("People would have their parents put to sleep for the inheritance." etc.)

French could take a look at what their Belgian neighbours did on the subject of the right to die. We have now an experience of several years if not decades. We even have a right to die for children. Something a lot of people opposed. People who fortunately never had to face the issue. But who still were vocal. Idiots.

President Macron arrived in Switzerland today for a state visit for the first time in 8 years. His predecessor François Hollande had made the first state visit in 17 years. And before that visit, there had not been a state visit since 1910.
Personally, I find this disgraceful.

There is say in French about being a ‘cretin des Alpes’. There were 2 explanations for that - consanguinity: these guys lived in their valleys and didn’t move so married between themselves. - lack of iod. That is why iod was added in the salt in 20th century. Swiss live in an island and are not that welcoming towards foreigners.

Macron said that he was a great admirer of G Depardieu and that Gege made the Grance proud.
Gege, a great actor, is in the middle of a scandal following interviews where he sexualizes girls of 13, calling women 'salopes' and more.
A stinking sob. He is also accused of rape but let us wait on that.
I mean wtf ? Could Macron not just shut up if he is unable to realize tje guy is a wreck and an ugly bastard ?
It is worth noting that Macron refused to join a definition of rape at european level.
The definition was : a rape is a sexual act committed without the consent of the other.
He opposed... I am thinking the guy has serious problems.

Yes, there has been a lot of public reaction about Macron's calling the business with Dépardieu a "manhunt". Extremely stupid in my opinion. As Whatagain said, he should shutup instead of getting involved in the judicial investigation of Dépardieu.

The media reports, for and against both Macron and Depardieu, are distorted. As I have not read the official files, I will refrain from continuing to feed the court of public opinion.

I already predicted that this would happen to several friends and also that Gabriel Attal will be the next president. He is currently the most popular politician in France (but he wasn't when I made my prediction -- I just saw how he was coming across in the media). The only possible obstacle is that he is gay. But that hasn't been a problem in Belgium so it shouldn't be in France.

It took us four times as long to learn what that generation has learned. The only plea that the old guys (and not many girls) can make is "experience." But when you see how wrong they got so many things, experience might be a negative point. In any case, I'm glad we're not in the same gerontocracy as the United States.

I don't know what Bob-a-Job week is but I agree with Kerouac. Better to have younger politicians who might make young people interested in politics and get involved. At least we can hope the young politicians and activists have a fresh outlook on life and policies, rather than the same old (mostly) men who are just interested on keeping their influence and their perks.

It's clear why all of the other countries (except Sweden, surprisingly) distanced themselves from Macron after his recent statement about Ukraine. They are scared to death that Russian television will talk about them.

The Congrès (Congress = Senate and National Assembly in joint session) is meeting in Versailles at the moment to change the constitution and give women full control over their reproductive rights so that abortion can never be challenged by any future laws. This is the first time that a constitutional change has been supported by every political party with represntation in France and has the support of 90% of the population. In the speeches, the men of the past are being raked over the coals as well they should be, having made all of the laws over the years concerning women and allowing so many thousands of them to die because the men were in control. It is not forgotten that French men did not give French women the right to vote until 1944 and that married French women did not have control over their bank accounts and couldn't even sign cheques without their husband's permission until 1966. Men!

Same in Belgium. My mother was allowed by her wedding contract to work only if my father gave his consent. Dad would choose the house and Mum follow. It is quite an interesting reading.

There were a few old male opponents to enshrining the right in the constitution with the excuse that the right was not under threat in France. Of course, that was what women in the States, Hungary, Poland and other countries thought. But I'm sure it was the US supreme court's decision that lit the fire and made the French move. Plus the huge amount of pressure from the wives and daughters of those same old, male French politicians -- mostly on the right.

The constitutional amendment required a three fifths majority. The vote was 780 to 72 or 92%.

Those pictures of Macron boxing seem to have made their way around the world. Of course they are ridiculous, but they are also amusing and informative. Just imagine those two presidential contenders in the United States doing a photo shoot like this.

This video (Why France Is Preparing for War) is extremely thorough (but also too long) for anybody interested in French military capabilities as certain countries try to downplay the situation. It has had 3 million views in just 3 days, so somebody must be interested.
For lighter entertainment, the movie The Wolf's Call from 2019 is a rare French movie about current military situations and has a pretty impressive cast with François Civil, Mathieu Kassovitz, Omar Sy, Reda Kateb and Paula Beer among others. Things become extremely tense and unpredictable.
