The Musée des Arts Forains ("museum of funfair objects") is not exactly a museum in the strictest sense of the term but instead what is known as a "living heritage collection." It is a privately owned space that is not normally open to the public at large but instead rented out for private functions and receptions. It can be visited throughout the year if you make a reservation, but it is the management that tells you when a group is being formed, and you can take it or leave it after being informed of the date and time. In recent times, though, visits are becoming more and more regular as the place becomes increasingly famous. I think it is quite probable that it will become a full time museum one day.
In the meantime, for the last seven years, there has been one week a year when it opens to the public all day -- the week after Christmas. At that time, the corporate cocktail parties and charity dinners are all finished for the year but the decorations are still up. And the kids are out of school, so it is the perfect time for most families.
I already made a report several years ago, but I felt it was time to return with a slightly better camera and maybe a sharper eye. Maybe not.
The path leading to the entrance sets the tone immediately.
Then you go through these doors into a different world.
This waxwork watches you as you queue up to buy your ticket. It is one of the most realistic ones, and I'm sure that I lot of people wonder if the man is alive or not.
Once you are inside, there is no path to follow, no explanatory labels to read. You just follow your nose or let your children drag you to what they have spotted.
The acrobat was just finishing her act as I entered the "theatre of marvels" part.
