Baking powder contains baking soda.
I guess my eyes were glazed over when she got to the salt part.

There's only one way to find out how it tastes...

Cruising the aisles in 'grab that trolley and ignore the speed limit', something caught my eye as I was passing a shelf in the baking aisle. I could hardly believe it - here was another box cake I had only ever seen in overseas magazines…Betty Crocker. I was glum when they had no more Pillsbury cake mixes but now I've got a new shot at a quick cake mix. So I got the vanilla. What a cake! Light, spongy, and a delight to eat. So I went back today and bought the other three flavours. A white looking one, a dark chocolate and a milk chocolate one. I add salt to all my cake mixes and it does improve the flavour.

Both Betty Crocker and Pillsbury have always been considered super reliable mixes in North America for people who don't make cakes from scratch (the vast majority of people).

Betty Crocker cakes are excellent. Never tried Pilsbury.

How much salt do you add tod?
My sister was a talented baker and she always said never a need to bake a cake from a recipe any longer since the box mixes are more than adequate.
We have Betty Crocker but I prefer Duncan Hines boxed mixes.

Mich - just a a pinch or two. Not a lot. I think it makes a difference. I have never heard of Duncan Hines. I see that the Pillsbury Cake nix comes from India.and Betty Crocker is made in Dubai. The box is full of Arabic writing.

I just had a memory that our our Easy Bake Oven came with Betty Crocker cake mixes and your could buy refills in the toy aisle at the department stores. Also that my sister used to make us her own batter, thinking now they were actually little cupcakes that are so popular now.
I will remember to try a pinch of salt Tod, thank you!

I've never used a packet mix to make a cake altho I hear that they're much better now than they were back in the 70s.
I have bought my son some of those boxes of chilled dough to make his own croissants and he really liked them. I've never made them from scratch myself but would love to have a go...very fattening tho.

I cannot remember the last time I baked a cake but after watching GBBO for the last few weeks and the fact I had been gifted some cobb nuts I decided to fill in an hour or so of a gloomy day. The coffee cake and praline is from a recipe from Mary Berry but I am not keen on buttercream filling which is part of her recipe so I adapted it and filled and topped it with coffee flavoured whipped cream. Its not particularly great looking but hopefully it will taste good when we eat some of it later. I have donated a quarter to my niece and her hubby - iof its not good I will dontae more to some other unsuspecting person ! live.staticflickr.com/65535/51706494281_4b97f67415_z.jpglive.staticflickr.com/65535/51705701892_ac1ce4c65f_z.jpg

That looks pretty amazing, but if you had said it was an onion cake with cream cheese, I would have believed you.

Looks wonderful, Lugg, & the coffee-flavored whipped cream is an inspired touch.
This was a great season of GBBO except that at the end I was rooting for everyone. Was crushed when Jurgen was eliminated. Going into the final it was nail-bitingly close &, had Crystelle not messed up the focaccia, she might have made it. Regardless, I was pretty sure who the winner was before the announcement & he definitely deserved it, although the two others were awfully impressive. Chigs' precision in his presentations was astounding and Crystelle's ambition and executions were equally praiseworthy.

And yet the word "cake" is also used in French for certain items.

Betty Crocker is on the shelves in Oz. They also stock microwave cake mixes which you bake in a ring pan suitable for m/w cooking. I have used a vegetable steamer with the central tower in the middle. Good for kids...Go to Woe less than 30 minutes, minimal mess.

Was crushed when Jurgen was eliminated. I was too Bixa ....but a worthy winner in the end I thought . It was a great series , long may it continue. i translate into kak, which means shit in flemish. I sometimes use the word kak - to mean shit but never knew it was Flemish ...my parents used it a lot.

In Oz a left-handed person is said to be 'kak handed'. Knowing that half the world will only use the left hand for toileting, it is all making sense to me now.
