I am lucky in that I can observe the illness objectively and subjectively ...'this illness causes loss of balance' or 'I lose my balance and fall down'. By shifting my thinking to the objective more I seem to manage things better and feel more in control. I really had a bad time when my driver's licence was recalled. Living in this hilly country, 4km from nearest shops and all my contacts living 20km or so away left me bereft. Fortunately the Govt has just started a program whereby I can have a car and driver on 24 hours notice, free. I am still missing the actual feel of driving...it was my sport and hobby, motor sport, rallying and long solo excursions camping in the desert. I'll get over it! s20.postimg.cc/ga8dp0nl9/wink.png

That is tough Questa, I sympathise with you. I can be unsteady on my feet and walk with a cane to support myself

I have reached the age where my mobile phone is becoming a real problem. Not the phone itself but all of the security codes that have to be entered to effect operations on the internet now. Before they added all of the new security keys, I was able to do everything immediately. Now I have to wait for an SMS to get a new code or else find the place to validate something on the bank app. I know they claim that this is to protect us but I suspect that all of the additional security was sold to these companies just to make a lot of extra money in consulting fees. I don't feel a bit safer using the new codes.

With FaceID, all that passwords crap is pretty much relegated to being an unpleasant memory. Dealing with it has today become a conscious choice rather than a necessity, even on my banking accounts both in the US and Italy.

I can't even lock my cellphone with my fingerprint because my fingertips are so smooth. I had a tough time getting a new passport and new ID cards this spring. In any case, I would hate to rely on my cellphone for banking or identification. I do not want to have to take it with me all the time.

I hate having my phone with me all the time too, but of course I take it when I travel. One of the worst nightmares in the last year was having to buy a plane ticket in Singapore on my phone at the last minute at the airport. It's a miracle that I managed because I had to call the help line yesterday to buy more tickets for a future trip -- after three days of trying. It used to be so easy just using my computer, but now they send all of the codes to my phone, which already requires two codes just to unlock it for a phone call.

my phone, which already requires two codes just to unlock it for a phone call. You can remove those safety codes. I originally put one but found it highly annoying to have to type it in just to phone.

I can't imagine having to enter two codes just to make a phone call. Nightmare scenario.

There was just one code to unlock the phone and then suddenly there was a demand to create a second code last December.
I will probably be changing phones soon and will ask at that time if I can get rid of all this horseshit.

You can remove those safety codes. I originally put one but found it highly annoying to have to type it in just to phone. I can't imagine having to put in a safety code just to phone. My phone doesn't recognize me when I'm wearing sun glasses, so wants the code then. Mine is a six-number code & I was annoyed to find out my sister only has to enter four numbers for her code. I guess that means all the phones are different.

I have a four digit code followed by a five digit code just to start the phone. And then if I use one of my credit cards, I have another six digit code to enter, followed by a five digit code. Since this is the card that was hacked twice, maybe they have a valid reason for this. Unfortunately, since it is a gold Mastercard, it is often the card I want to use the most often for the travel insurance included.

Wouldn't it be better to do that kind of transaction on your computer rather than a fiddly little phone?

When I do it on my computer, it sends me to my phone for the codes. I hate it!

It should give you a choice between sms and email. You can specify using email through your credit card company/bank. That way you can get it right on the computer.

When I originally bought the phone, there were three methods of locking it: facial recognition, fingerprint or a 4-digit code. As I said before, the fingerprint thing didn't work, so I put in a code for when I start the phone. I then discovered that I had to type that code in when I wanted to use the phone. So I removed all the security things and just have the code for when I start the phone if it has been turned off. Since I don't usually bother turning it off at night, I rarely need the code.
I suppose there is more and more hacking/online scams etc, because like Kerouac, if I buy or do any online banking, I have a code sent to my phone, plus another personal code from the bank that has to be entered. I don't pay by phone, I only use my laptop.

My bank always wants to give me an sms. Depending on my mood, I either let them or whine or insist that they send me an email.

Anyway, to get to the health issue, more and more things are obligatorily online in France now, the most recent one being a real estate declaration that all owners have to make, and this was only proposed online with no paper alternative. Since older people are the most common owners of real estate, the geniuses in charge of this were surprised at how few people responded, especially since there is a financial penalty for not making the declaration. So they have extended the deadline, with lots of old people waiting for hours in the tax office for an employee to do it for them.
And then the media say "oh those poor old people, they just can't handle computers." They don't quite say "No problem, that generation will be dead soon," but that is the implication.

I have recently had a few days where I've been on my feet walking for hours, and I'm finding that the following day my legs ache. Dr Google says it's because I'm fat...but I've always been fat and not had the problem before. I am losing weight (18lb so far) but it doesn't seem to help much...The lurching totter when I get up after sitting for a while is quite disturbing!

Question - is it a regular occurrence you are on your feet walking for hours for a few days? Or did it used to be but not really recently? Just wondering if you got stiff muscles from overdoing it on the first day or two and since then they've not had chance to recover.

My first few steps after sitting are pretty creaky, with a “hitch in my getalong”. But it gets better quickly.

You hit the nail on the head I think Mark. Since Covid I rarely go out...and what with trip to Glasgow and the day in town on Thursday with the (much younger than me) girls I think I've been doing much more walking than usual. I walk the dog every day a least once (Jeff usually does the other walks) but we are rarely out for longer than 45 - 60 minutes and they are more like 'ambles' as the dog likes to sniff every clump of grass and pee every 20 yards.... My young female relatives march around at quite a pace for hours and hours and hours....and when I left DiL on Thursday I still had quite a walk to the bus station... Anyway my legs are much improved today (!) just the odd twinge.

I agree with Mark -- unaccustomed exercise will always make your muscles hurt for a while. I don't think it's a question of aging -- going from little walking to a lot in a short time would make your legs hurt even if you were 30 years younger.

I'm still quite good with walking almost endlessly all day. The day I can't I'll know that the end is nigh.

My usual walk to the bakery is just about 5 minutes. Sometimes I feel that when that seems a long way, it will mean that I am really old.

I'm fairly lucky with aging and fitness but I do notice I can't brush off stiff muscles and so on as quickly, they hang on a day or two longer. I'm still pretty flexible though and surprised Mrs M a few weeks ago when I needed to sort out the bottom shelf of the fridge and just sat down on the floor in a crossed leg position then stood up again when I was finished. She remarked she could never do that anyway and doubted our daughters would be capable either. I did have to put one hand down to start me off back up again though. The main worry though is wondering if I injure myself however minor, will I then not recover like accepted as normal when younger and have to live with it till the end of days.

I saw somewhere that the main thing you have to be able to do when you get old is stand up from a seated position (on a chair or armchair) without help.
