I was 72 yesterday but don't feel I'm declining yet. I do need to keep fit and enjoy it but I don't get quite as much gardening in winter plus I lost my main job and haven't found a replacement yet. Walk 2 dogs each day. Happy birthday. Mjne comes in one month.

Happy birthday. Mjne comes in one month. Lots of us here don't care about celebrating your birthday, Whatagain. We just wish that were the birthday we were having.

Who says Aging is Declining? In some ways we come into our own as we mature. In other ways, not so much... My intent in naming the thread The Aging Process was to allow for a broad discussion of all aspects of what each of us may or may not be experiencing as we grow older. As someone mentioned early on in the original thread, a "neutral" topic. This would include not only physical decline but also our changes in attitudes about certain things; philosophical, emotional, psychological etc. For instance, I am much more tolerant of certain behaviors in people and less tolerant of others. To me, characterizing that as having something to do with decline but part of a process developed over time.

Sounds like it is time to open a whole new topic but not necessarily in the clinic. I doubt that any of us could say that we have not changed opinions about quite a few things over the years, but I wouldn't say that it is necessarily because we aged but rather because we received better information, or the world around us changed, or we had direct contact with a problem that we had never thought about or any number of other things. I know that quite a few of my opinions changed the moment I moved from high school to university but I was only 16 years old. The changes happened not because I had become older but because I was in a totally new and different environment.

More and more of the "easy open" packages of things from the supermarket are thwarting me. Pull here, lift here, tear here… I usually have to get out my scissors or another tool to rip the damned thing open. I do not know if I am become very feeble or if this is a trick that they are playing on everybody.

It's those flipping 'child proof' tops that I struggle with, especially on bleach bottles where you have to squeeze and rotate the lid in order to open the bottle...ggggggrrrrrr....

They are *much* stronger than a similar thickness of plastic was twenty or thirty years ago.

Whenever my husband or I try to open something by looking for the place to peel off the top, we joke that it's "overture facile" (easy opening).

sorry Kimby...I thought it was a universal, if vulgar, phrase. a further indication of my decline.
You heard about the guy who called his new dog "incline" because he was a slow pup...On his kennel, instead of painting the dog's name he just drew an ink line.
I'll get my coat....

I ‘ll bring you all back down to earth with a bump, as I was yesterday. For a long time I have had painful ankles which I put down to arthritis. When the quack had them X rayed they could find nothing wrong and came out with the usual “it’s your age, don’t make a fuss, now just find a nice quiet corner and die peacefully, I have better things to do”.
Friday when I went for the bus my ankles were bad but I had trouble walking and couldn’t keep standing properly. When I went toget on the bus my legs gave way and I just sank gracefully? to the ground. Ambulance called and someone got me a chair to sit on, but after a while Igot up and with help walked home, cancelled the ambulance. Had a difficult day and slight improvement now. Will have to consider my position as they say.
DO NOT GET OLD IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!!

How did the whole post go wrong? In what way? Quite simple really...I don't know how to use a computer anymore...not that I ever really did.It is 1am here and I must hit the sack but I may be looking for a patient tutor to help me. I'm sure the thing has problems but techie says it's fine. Sigh...brain transplant would help as well!

Sleep well questa. And remember when things “go south” it often helps to turn off and turn on the misbehaving appliance. Same is true of our aging bodies. Reboot by sleeping. 😊

Will have to consider my position as they say. DO NOT GET OLD IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!! Mossie, I’m so sorry to hear this! Glad you were able to get back up and go home, and it’s certainly lucky you didn’t seriously injure anything when you "sank gracefully." It’s good you know how to properly fall! Would some type of physical or occupational therapy be an option to gently strengthen, stretch, and stabilize muscles, working towards better mobility? It can be amazing at how much good several sessions with a trained therapist can do. I’ve always had lousy knees and they’ve been bothering me even more lately because of carrying many heavy boxes up stairs when moving my things back into my home. Then, while walking across an intersection in Miami a few weeks ago, I felt a pop in my left knee, followed by a lot of pain and eventual swelling. I started physical therapy not long after I’d returned home and I’m already starting to feel more strength and stability than I’d had before. Since it’s all interconnected, and they found my hip strength wasn’t as good as it should be, they are working to improve muscle strength in isolated areas and help stabilize joints from the hips down. I can’t say enough good things about my physical therapy sessions (this is my third experience in about 15 years).

Mossie, my mother would fall in slow motion as well. She wasn't able to get by herself, but she wasn't hurt either. I certainly understood immediately the importance of the railings along all of the corridors of the nursing homes. People would fall ten times more often without them.
Maybe it is time for you to start using a cane although those are generally only for the elderly.

came out with the usual “it’s your age, don’t make a fuss, now just find a nice quiet corner and die peacefully This is my biggest fear about aging, not only about my own advancing years, but also those of family & friends. I think all too often it's reflexively decided that whatever problem is because of age, rather than time being taken to listen and assess and perhaps realize that the aged person could be helped or could help him/herself. Would some type of physical or occupational therapy be an option That is such a good idea. I know from my mother that much of that type of therapy is not at all the brutal exercise we imagine & fear, but rather techniques to improve balance and strength. Maybe it is time for you to start using a cane I've heard that one shouldn't self-prescribe a cane. Apparently the necessity for one needs to be carefully considered and the person needs to have one fitted for the correct height, etc.

The other thing I know can be beneficial is massage therapy to help improve circulation and flexibility. Again, needs to be performed by a person who is well trained.

Thank you everyone for the kind words.
I was being facetious about the quack's remarks, but I am sure they must think along those lines.
I will see what tomorrow brings, and using a stick which I have had for a long time, will attempt a trip into the town. I must not give up although it would be easy to do so.

I promised a friend some succulent cuttings and went to get an empty box from my supply.
Inside was a whole range of cuttings I put together last October to send him...
Having packed them I just put the box back on the shelf.
Not a good sign.

With all this free time to do gardening tasks I am finding myself revving up mentally to accomplish all manner of chores.
Things I would just a few years ago it seems, accomplish in no time at all keep getting "shelved". Then, I get overwhelmed psychologically when I see the accumulation grow and grow...
I have packets of seeds piling up. Rooted cuttings in tiny pots that need to go in the ground and subsequently have to be constantly watered.
I finally did get around to cleaning out the pond but was wiped out afterwards.
You are not alone Mick.
