She was about the last political figure in France with a number tattooed on her arm.

French media reaction is pretty much overwhelmed, almost to the same dimension as the death of General De Gaulle. Television programmes have been totally changed for the next day or two, and there will be a major national hommage on 5 July with President Macron.
It will be interesting to see how the Front National reacts to all of this because Simone Veil was their #1 enemy (at least of Jean-Marie Le Pen) back during the abortion vote or more specifically because she was Jewish).
It should also be mentioned that Simone Veil was the first woman to be elected as president of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1982.

I would say that it marks the end of an era, but France has brought Veil's vision forward into the present.
Really, France has so, so, SO much less to be ashamed of right now that some other first world countries I could name.

Simone Veil is clearly deserving the homages she is getting. A great figure. Yet france is still backwards in terms of laws concerning women (a lot of women came and still come to Belgium to be fertilised...) and gay marriage has only been introduced recently. We of course are backwards compared to Scandinavia.

Simone Veil is one of the few political figures I have ever respected. I heard excerpts from interviews with her yesterday and when she described some of the reactions from the almost completely make National Assembly when she proposed her laws on women's right to choose about pregnancy, I was horrified. So some progress has been made and now that there are many more women in parliament, it should be hoped that such words are never said again.

I just read that a law has been passed in Arkansas to forbid one s wife to have abortion. So yes progress are made but can be unmade. Women are still at risk and are still not considered free of their actions in many ways. Sigh. On the other hand us males are so stupid if we let women be our equals they'll surpass us. Or I guess many males intrinsically think it. I guess we are afraid of you ...
