I can't recall whether or not we have ever discussed soundtracks of movies, some are musicals and others are not. In any event, I conjured up a list in my head of soundtracks that are quite memorable and I do have some recordings of a few.
Cabaret Clockwork Orange Oliver Apocalypse Now Goodfellas Casino (Martin Scorcese used quite a lot of Rolling Stones music in his films. I can't recall them all at the moment)
I know I will think of some others.

I used to buy a ton of soundtrack albums. I'll have to think of which ones were my favourites. I don't think I have bought one in about 10 years, though.

I think that some of the choices of music that some film directors use speaks so much as to their creative bend and how it identifies with the plot. It's hard to put into words what I'm trying to say but take for instance, Jonathan Demme and the film Philadelphia. He uses Bruce Springsteen in the original scenes and ends with Neil Young. For me, they both lent a type of emotion that otherwise might have been lacking without. Then of course, he made Stop Making Sense with the Talking Heads. Brilliant, despite any plot.

You are right that movie soundtracks have not been discussed as a separate topic, Casimira -- a strange oversight!
Can we also mention soundtracks from recent "better" tv series? Certainly The Leftovers and The Handmaid's Tale come immediately to mind. Boardwalk Empire also used music quite powerfully.

By all means yes. I actually did think of this sometime after posting the OP and then got caught up in the holidays events only to come back online and see your post. The Handmaid's Tale being the most glaring of examples of which you speak. I have not seen any of Boardwalk but, have been meaning to get around to watching it. Mad Men also used some great music that represented some great period pieces that marked the coverage of time. Another film that came to mind was Martin Scorcese's The Last Waltz.
With regard to foreign films, I loved the soundtrack to Truffauat's Jules et Jim and another film Un Coeur En Hiver where the music is so integral a part of the film it could almost be a character. (Maurice Ravel). Huckle, those are great examples, thanks!

where the music is so integral a part of the film it could almost be a character. That immediately made me think of La Strada.
