I think there was a thread about this once before, but I can't find it. Anyway, would be interesting to know how everyone now browses the forum. Do you: 1) Only look at the main page? 2) Only look at "Participated"? 3) Only look at the Forum info box to see the latest thing posted? 4) Check out "Recent Threads"? 5) Check out "Recent Posts?" 6) Only look at stuff you have bookmarked? 7) Combinations of the above? 8) Other? Do you think you manage to see everything using your method, or do you worry you miss things? Inquiring minds want to know!

7. I start with the main page and see where something has been posted since I last looked. If I'm at the coast and use my phone, I only check out Recent Posts because it's too difficult otherwise. I sometimes look at Recent posts too when threads are very picture heavy and I have already looked at them -- not that I don't appreciate them but because it often takes a while to load.

The site opens for me on "Recent Posts". If there is a blue surrounding to "Participated", then I will open it to see which post has been updated.

The sites opens for me on "Recent threads". Then I'll check the ones I participated in, or open a thread that looks interesting.

Recent posts on the phone, main page on the PC then recent posts or recent threads depending on my whim.

I go to Recently Updated Posts. That only works well if I check in regularly. While we were away, I could check in but didn't follow through to the actual threads I wanted to see, and I'm afraid some have fallen so far down in the queue that I'll overlook them.

The site opens for me on "Recent Posts". The sites opens for me on "Recent threads". That's interesting! I'm assuming this is something you all set in your browsers? I'm honestly surprised that everybody doesn't start on the main page, but since I never look at the forum on a phone I'm not aware of technical reasons not to look at the main page. My method is 7, except that I never use Bookmarks nor Recent Posts. Okay, occasionally I will check Recent posts for the reason Bjd stated: I sometimes look at Recent posts too when threads are very picture heavy and I have already looked at them -- not that I don't appreciate them but because it often takes a while to load. I guess I don't bother with Recent Posts because Recent Threads will carry me directly to the meat of the thread, plus I can reply there. I should include #8 -- Other -- because every once in a while I remember to open boards to see what I might have missed. Must confess that I don't do it often enough.

Depends on the device I'm using. If I want to add photos I use my laptop. Then I'll start from the main page...also use my laptop if I'm settled for the evening, go to the main page and sometimes check out 'recent threads'. More often I access the board using my kindle fire..I have on old clunky one that has a 7" screen and a newer one with a 6" screen. On the kindle fire devices I open with recent threads. Sometimes I trawl the board looking for specific threads too...that's fun because you turn up all sorts of interesting threads that you might have missed....

Open at the main page and look at all sites updated since I last looked, usually daily, even when I am on holiday as I take my iPad.

I directly jump at 'recent threads' and never look at main page - sorry about that

I always start at the main page, but I suppose that is sort of my job. And I read every single post sooner or later, even though it is destroying my brain.

I directly jump at 'recent threads' and never look at main page I think that Recent Threads actually gives the most complete overview of what is on the forum. I always start at the main page, but I suppose that is sort of my job. And I read every single post sooner or later, even though it is destroying my brain. I start on the main page, too, since that is what Anyport opens to for me, but then immediately click Participated and later Recent Threads. Not that this is the optimum way to do things, just what my habit is. I don't think I'm very good at reading every single post.

I usually open at Recent Posts, but if there's something that's clearly part of a longer interesting discussion, I'll go to Recent Threads to get a clearer structured view. Sometimes I'll go straight to Participated if I've actually been in an interesting discussion. Going to the main home page means doing a lot more scanning and comparison with memory to find the things I might be interested in. My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

I have the recent posts page as my APIAS bookmark. As a result, checking in almost daily I see and read pretty much every post made to the forum, even when I go for long stretches without posting.

I can't remember if Participated is set as default or not. If anyone here doesn't have Participated on the Main Page, here's how to get it: Profile > Edit Profile > Settings.
It's the first thing on Settings:
Show Participated Displays the participated button next to the navigation tree. Yes No
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Something I am curious about -- this is a general question to everyone:
When you began as a forum member, were you browsing it on a computer or laptop?
If so, is that what you still use, or have you switched to a mobile device? If yes, do you feel that you participate less, because reading/typing on a small screen is not as comfortable?

If I am short on time I just check participated then later go through Recent Threads and pictures. Sometimes I go back to old posts...there are some great posts that many would not have seen. Such a waste...we should have a "Recycle Box" where some of the good posts or parts thereof can be seen again.
I joined up with an antediluvian PC which I still use. My hand tremors make it almost impossible to use a mobile phone...mine is for emergencies only.

At home I use a big, noisy desk computer, which is what I started with. When I am at the coast, I use my smartphone to check email and internet stuff when necessary but looking at Anyport is really a problem because I can't see anything but the right hand side of the home page. So I just go to recent posts and scroll through, thinking I will check photos and longer threads when I get home.

So I just go to recent posts and scroll through, thinking I will check photos and longer threads when I get home. Thanks, Bjd. That somewhat corroborates my suspicion that people using phones are restricted in their enjoyment of the forum. Based on my use of other social media and observing the arc of participation on this forum since its inception, I have the strong feeling that forums are negatively affected by the advance of smaller devices. On facebook I sometimes come across long strings of comments wherein strangers (i.e., not facebook friends of each other) respond to a post and to each other. But based strictly on my own experience, I'd say most younger people are unaware of social interaction sites that existed pre-facebook, or even pre-MySpace. With older people of all ages, many were never exposed to anything on a computer outside of email, so they can be daunted or overwhelmed by first exposure to an established forum. These are strictly my own conjectures, and I could be way off base. Some of my musings on the subject came about from watching how certain threads on this forum which started out with rather full comments that invited interaction -- The Sound Around You comes to mind, for instance -- have since dwindled to terse announcements of what each poster is hearing.

Maybe with all the technology beeping and buzzing around us we become inured to all background sounds. Have we forgotten how to listen to and only sometimes really hear

Good to know, as while I usually look at the board every day or almost, sometimes I'm simply too busy. Homepage here, but I also do searches.
I haven't had a desktop computer in many years, but I don't have a smartphone yet. Suppose I'll have to get one if I travel anywhere; evidently they are cheaper in Europe than in Canada.

I haven't had a desktop computer in many years -- In my mind, a laptop is also a "desktop computer", since that's how I use mine.

Yes, it is simply much more portable. With climate change, even up here we have hot, sultry days, so I cycle to my nearby library (lovely thing) and enjoy the "clim" (pronounced like "cleem", but probably even more than in Spanish, shorter than the English vowel) or AC in English.
