I am getting more attracted to Nantes, but not to weird park benches which could tip me up. The chimneys in your first shot atGL are not at all bothered about you admiring the architecture, they want you inside admiring the goods on offer, and , better still, actually buying it. The chimneys in your first shot at the castle are great.

Your photos are superb Kerouac, and I'm right behind you on that thin green line! What a tour your have given us - Who would have thought Nantes was such an interesting place....not me for one but your fantastic photo-essay has proved me wrong. There is far too much to comment on - everything is worthy of a long glance and then come back to moments later to look again!

Well, Kerouac -- you've undoubtedly started a run on Nantes by everyone who will see this thread! Even without the festival extras, it seems so interesting and attractive.
I saw the first set of botanical garden pictures last night, but waited to comment since it looked as though you had more to share. You sure did! So much personality in that garden and so much that is unexpected. I love the way there are landscaped areas such as those in private gardens along with all the whimsical touches, every one of which looks as though it belongs. I've never seen that sort of planting within little squares surrounded by lawn before -- most interesting.
And the cemetery -- ooooo! You really captured the atmosphere of beautifully moody decay along with the sobering ranks of all those stones from WWI.
You have really outdone yourself with shots of the city -- so many wonderful views and unexpected angles, just some great photographs.
Are you going to tell us whether or not you slid down the slide?

Nantes seems to have put its heart and soul into being a playful city.
Kerouac, did the people who created the elephant also do a camel? I recently saw a video of a camel replica walking which your elephant photo reminded me of.

Thanks for all of the remarks. I'll try to get back to the questions later, but no, I haven't heard of a Royal de Luxe camel yet, but I will investigate. I know there is a heron (!) that you can ride.

The final part of the museum was a passage to the chapel. s19.postimg.cc/sw366krdf/Nantes_479.jpgHere is a view of "le cube" as I walked to the chapel. s19.postimg.cc/8fs5och3n/Nantes_480.jpgThe chapel contained a very disturbing video display (with appropriate warnings). On the left was a childbirth video and on the right there was an old woman dying at the same time. s19.postimg.cc/q0q2zpndf/Nantes_482.jpgThe young mother was clearly in great pain but clearly very happy once she had squeezed it out. As for the old woman, there was no help for her. It was pretty unbearable. s19.postimg.cc/sgrwdk5g3/Nantes_481.jpgAfter regaining my composure I headed back to the cathedral or rather its crypt, which one can visit free of charge. s19.postimg.cc/v1xh12utv/Nantes_483.jpgIt contains the history of the building, which was of limited interest to me. s19.postimg.cc/d0ec3a0sz/Nantes_484.jpgNevertheless, I could appreciate that it was recently renovated and well done. s19.postimg.cc/jyn1myob7/Nantes_485.jpgI saw that the cathedral did not escape damage from the Allied bombings, but just certain wings of it. s19.postimg.cc/jn5la77v7/Nantes_486.jpgAnd then I learned why the stained glass windows are all modern. The cathedral burned down in 1972! Repairs lasted for 20 years. s19.postimg.cc/5or9gpc43/Nantes_487.jpgThe fire was started by a blowtorch during renovation of the roof. Oops! I found a couple of other photos on the internet. s19.postimg.cc/wf24zob6b/incendie_1.jpgs19.postimg.cc/i9wbxv24z/incendie_2.jpgThis should work as a brief video link: fresques.ina.fr/ouest-en-memoire/fiche-media/Region00051/incendie-de-la-cathedrale-a-nantes.htmlAnyway, now I know that those modern windows all date from 1985. s19.postimg.cc/a8znqero3/Nantes_492.jpgs19.postimg.cc/6n7mizpg3/Nantes_493.jpgThe crypt also had some "treasure." I have no interest in this sort of stuff, but here are a couple of samples. s19.postimg.cc/3jt4ae6c3/Nantes_488.jpgs19.postimg.cc/8jqkicbyr/Nantes_490.jpgs19.postimg.cc/3rz4pvatv/Nantes_489.jpgThere was an exit from the crypt into the cathedral, and I discovered that there was a viewing platform for the big tomb (of Mr & Mrs something or other, duke, duchess, who knows?). s19.postimg.cc/a0230hevn/Nantes_491.jpg

Thanks very much for this comprehensive tour of a city which I had only known by name. Those creepy plant pots over the gateway in the botanical gardens would deter me from entering.

I don't think I can say anything about this report without burbling, so will try to limit myself. But really ~ wow!
I've looked at this page three times, something I recommend for all reports of this breadth. There is a tendency to rush along in order to see what happens next. But slowing down or re-looking affords all the pleasure that well-crafted pictures, whether beautiful &/or full of information, have to give.
Admittedly you point out that it took twenty years to completely renovate the cathedral. Still, I was struck by this sentence in the video link: La cathédrale est fermée au public durant les trois années de travaux. compared to this statement about the museum, which was closed for renovation for 6 years
At any rate, BRAVO! and thank you for this treat.
