I have watched the French version a few times and became bored immediately. The macho boss, the crybaby, the useless one or two people, the tough Amazon, etc. And to do what? Stand on a stump the longest?
So now I avoid it completely.

I've seen the American version. It is identical.

In format maybe. But the individuals become family members over the course of a season.

I watched the final episode of season two of After Life last night. It was one of those scripts that seem to be written so the episode can be either the end of the show or a springboard for a new series. Regardless, it was a nice finale for the season and very moving, as so many of the episodes have been.
There was very little for me to pick at in the show and nothing to complain about. It caused a 180° turn in my impression of Ricky Gervais, as his acting blew me away. Repeating myself from earlier in the thread, but the supporting cast was perfect as well, even the dog.
Now I've started watching Upload, mainly because Amazon Prime makes it available to me in 4K & I have the perfect screen to watch that on. Well, I was also attracted to it because it's about AI, a perpetually fascinating subject. Luckily my expectations were low, as it's very slight, but entertaining enough to keep my interest so far and fluffy enough to be watched while eating.

I follow Ricky Gervais on fb and he posted that so many people have watched Afterlife and given 5* reviews that series 3 has been commissioned.

In format maybe. But the individuals become family members over the course of a season. I understand that, but I just cannot watch it long enough to become attached to anybody on these shows. I must also admit that I totally reject something that these shows do (I'm including The Amazing Race, which also exists in a French version). I cannot stand the idea that people in distress or in dire straits have a perfectly normal camera crew filming them, probably swigging Red Bull and eating Cheetos in front of them. There are a couple of shows in France (maybe in the US also) which have no camera crew and everything is done with selfie sticks and GoPro cameras. One of them is called "I'm going to sleep at your place" and is about a guy who goes all over the world meeting people and convincing them to let him stay in their home. I don't really like it because I find him pushy. The other one is called "Nus et culottés" which is a play on words concerning 'culottés' since it means both cheeky and 'wearing pants' so you could say that it is called more or less "Naked and Daring." It has two guys who have a mission in various countries such as "Have tea with a baron" (England of course) or "Go to the top of a volcano." They start out stark naked with no money. All they have is their video equipment. (No, you never see their genitals.) The first 10 minutes or so, they have to find clothes after usually fashioning things out of leaves and vines and try to get their bearings. Sometimes they encounter friendly people immediately and sometimes not, since two naked young men might be crazy and dangerous. But of course they are given clothes relatively rapidly by generous souls. And they make little gifts out of twigs or paper or something to thank people for their generosity. Whoever took them in can usually help them with a contact for the next part of their quest... I'm pretty sure that part of it is fake (how could they be so lucky every single time?) but at least there are no external camera crews watching them.

I watched the HBO miniseries The Outsider, which was very upsetting. I didn't realize that it was a Stephen King thing at first, but all of the traditional elements quickly made it obvious. Horrible murders of children, abnormal behaviour by adults and finally a supernatural investigator to figure it all out. It has an age 16 rating for France, which is always an age 18 rating in most other places, and it absolutely deserves it. I was watching the next-to-last episode last night and was completely unable to watch the final episode afterwards, since it involved just a couple of people going into caves with flashlights. And everybody knows what is going to happen in a cave in a Stephen King story.
So I watched the final episode at 8 am this morning and I'm glad I'm done with it. Congratulations to Jason Bateman for doing something totally out of character.

I have finished watching Normal People and really enjoyed the emotional roller coaster for the most part. I am now about 3 into Series 1 of Afterlife, finding it a bit "Officey" at the moment but going to stick with it.

When it grabs you, it grabs you, Lugg. Give yourself over to the soppy manipulation!
I'm still sort of watching Upload but honestly, it is crap.

I've mentioned this before, but since the series has not screened for awhile, I have to mention it again. There is a series called Commissaire Dupin which is about a police chief who was transferred from Paris to Brittany for disciplinary reasons. He solves all sorts of cases in the midst of Breton folklore festivals or crêpe eating locals. The problem is that it is actually a German series called Kommissar Dupin and the original version is in German. So I have to switch to the dubbed version on my television or it is unbearable to me.
Here is an example of all of these Bretons speaking German to each other with accordeon music (albeit Argentinian) in the background to make it French.
Apparently the series brings huge numbers of German tourists to Brittany every year.

Watching episode four, series three of Killing Eve this evening.
If you enjoyed Afterlife you may like The Invention of Lying a very gentle film with Ricky Gervais in the lead role. Watching the film (and his Humanity stand up on netflix) changed my view of Ricky Gervais. I hated The Office incidentally...

I just watched the first episode of The Great, which is, well, great! Elle Fanning is absolutely wonderful.

I watched all three seasons of the dreadful Wrecked, which is apparently a comic take on Lost. 27 minute episodes made it almost bearable, but by the end I was watching as many episodes as possible just to get it over with. For a comedy, an awful lot of people die. I was also quite perplexed by a rather large amount of full frontal nudity and hundreds of bleeped-out 'fucks'. Since we normally do not censor such things here, I was wondering if it was made to be shown like that right from that start or if something happened along the way.

This afternoon I watched a couple of episodes of the classic The Wild Wild West, a show which I loved as a teenager. My tastes have definitely changed, but it holds up relatively well except for one thing -- the absolutely garish colours. Back then I saw it all in black and white, so there was nothing shocking about it. But everybody (always elegantly dressed) wears incredibly colourful attire, not at all in line with how we have been shown the old west in other series and movies. They wear green suits, red suits, purple suits, and the makeup is also beyond belief.
I had to go look up if the series had been filmed in black and white and colorized later. It turns out that the first season was in B&W and it switched to colour afterwards. I had very few occasions to see colour television in those days, but I do recall that the colours were always totally dull no matter how much you turned the colour dial, so I completely understand why they would have wanted to use as many extravagant colours as possible. But it seems to me that for modern presentation, they could very easily tone down the colours to modern tastes.
As for the plots, they are just as preposterous as I remember, but that was part of the fun. After all, the whole point of the series was to mix old westerns with James Bond. But most of it is played as being dead serious, which is not the case of 007 movies in the current century.
Final verdict -- it is still watchable when you have nothing better to do.

Watching Major Crimes on just normal broadcast television. I have liked Mary McDonnell ever since she was Donnie Darko's mother.

Looks like fun, Lugg ~ thanks! Still watching The Great & still enjoying the heck out of it. An added attraction is the brilliance of the songs chosen for each episode's ending, with heavy emphasis on women artists.

Had a look for the Great; good news it is coming to Channel 4 this year not sure on the date and is available through Amazon in June I think .
I watched the first one of the Flower Fight series last night - not quite what I expected but quite entertaining nonetheless.

I finished watching "The Great" a couple of days ago. Good fun.
Now I've seen a couple of episodes of a production from 2012 called Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Set in Australia - "....revolves around the personal and professional life of Phryne Fisher, a glamorous private detective in late 1920s Melbourne." Gentle escapism -

Finished The Great, which was a super satisfying entertainment & started Dickinson. I like it much more than I thought I would. Again, more excellently chosen music by women rockers. I've only seen the first episode so far.
I tried Miss Fisher a while back & it was a tad too gentle or something.

We are about to start watching VEEP. The third season, because that was all we could get from our library, which is doing curb-side pickups for materials on the shelves, but not allowing returns or interlibrary transfers, so little is available.
Part of the problem is we will have a new library building in July, and it will be easier if they don’t have to move all those materials, but can just have patrons return their materials to the new library.
I hope it doesn’t matter that we haven’t seen Veep season 1 or 2...

I’m in the middle of watching the TV cook Rick Stein on his travels in Mexico. And tonight he is in Oaxaca!
He particularly mentions the dried insects and Oaxacan cheese but I don’t recall our local correspondent mentioning it.
He meets with the Mendoza sisters and Nora Valencia who are famous cooks. No doubt our correspondent know them well.

I'm pretty sure the only time I've ever had Mexican cheese was being in Mexico, but have no recollection of it. I've seen it in the market called "queso fresco" or something. Wasn't tempted at all.
