It's been many years since BBC English was the only voice you heard and more regional and 'normal' voices came in. The problem is that there are some that can be annoying and/or verging on the incomprehensible. Hers is understandable but to me it isn't such an appealing voice. However, the surprise for me was the change in Charlie Dimmock. You are right that it is understandable, but not appealing. I can't figure out if her thing with the letter R is a slight speech impediment or an affectation. Mick mentioned somewhere about Dimmock's extreme weight gain. When I first started watching the show I was being judgmental about her rather sloppy appearance. Also, she keeps making joking comments about how she is so old. I could tell that that she is not in fact old, so looked her up. She was born August 10, 1966, so happy birthday, Charlie. She lost her mother & stepfather in the December 2004 tsunami and retreated from public view for several years. After reading all that I felt much more sympathetic toward her, as before her braying voice and relentless bumptiousness had sort of put me off. I guess the schtick about being old is a form of defensiveness and of course that kind of weight gain can be a result of depression &/or self-protection. www.express.co.uk/life-style/garden/649670/Gardening-Charlie-Dimmock-returns-more-than-decade-off-TV-screensI haven't noticed a speech impediment as such; it's a more relaxed accent than old-fashioned RP, not one I can place regionally (whereas Charlie Dimmock is a Hampshire as ever, and the Rich brothers obviously Welsh, and please can they find some other adjective besides "lovely"). Thanks, Patrick! What is RP? I notice that in the earlier episodes they didn't lean quite so heavily on lovely. I've watched a bunch of episodes and there was a whole spate of them where the brothers over-used the word luscious rather inaccurately. Thank goodness they've given that up.

Jeff is monopolising the TV atm as he's watching a few new series on Netflix...including The Umbrella Academy. I've come to the conclusion that the only reason I don't watch them with him is because he insists on binge watching...I'm a 'one episode per day/week' sort of person...the only things I binged really were Good Omens and Afterlife...and the only reason I binge watched them was because Jeff was in charge of the TV remote.

Thanks, Mark. I am now x2 into Series 1 of Harlots , I think it is great. Yes ~ yaaay! Thanks so much for that link, which really says it all. So you know, it is a three-season show -- there will not be a fourth season. he insists on binge watching...I'm a 'one episode per day/week' sort of person. Correct! I've turned various friends on to p*rate tv and some of them turn into absolute pigs in the way they'll gobble up entire series at a single gulp. Sheesh. Who knew that people I like and respect were the kind to open their presents before Christmas. One friend with whom I particularly like to discuss shows gets satellite tv from the US. If there is a series wherein all the episodes are released at one time, she'll watch every damned one of them at once. This makes her useless for discussion purposes, as I want to avoid accidental spoilers. Recently I finally started watching Outlander. I'd avoided it for a long time because there was a constant theme in the book(s) that I found repellent. Also, for whatever reason, the one chance I gave the tv show a while back just bored me. Anyway, after wallowing in the perfectly wonderful Carnival Row, I was desperate for another fantasy/costume show. This time, after two episodes of Outlander, I was hooked. I've now watched six episodes of the first season and can see that the theme I hated so much has been replaced with something also perfectly dreadful, but easier to skip over when it comes up.

I have avoided Outlander too , although my sis and some friends keep encouraging me to watch it. Maybe I will give it a go some time. Just started series 1 of The Fall which ticks many boxes for me , psychological drama, police procedural etc. Anyway x2 in and it is maintaining my interest. First, thanks for the links on The Fall. I only read the first one in fear that the second might have spoilers. Will definitely file it away for when I'm ready to watch something that takes place in the century I actually live in. Up at #965 I said, I finally started watching Outlander. I'd avoided it for a long time because there was a constant theme in the book(s) that I found repellent. ... the theme I hated so much has been replaced with something also perfectly dreadful, but easier to skip over when it comes up.That turned out not to be true. Rather than continuing to avoid naming it, I'll say that I find sadism and rape as part of entertainment hard to take. So far there has been vicious, realistic, drawn-out flogging, with clips from it interspersed into other episodes. Also, the original theme I find so distressing has played out this way so far (season 1 and half of season 2): one man-on-man rape with extra brutality thrown in; three attempted rapes; one rape of very young woman; one man-on-boy rape; and one reluctant oh-go-ahead-and-fuck-me incident in payment of a life saving debt. There is also regular consensual sex which is graphic enough that, if you don't know how, you can learn from watching this show. I admit all of that sounds terribly off-putting. The problem is, the plot is entirely compelling and the sets, costumes, acting, etc. make for really good viewing.

We wondered how there could be a Season Three of NARCOS, since Pablo Escobar was killed in the final episode of Season Two. But season 3 got fairly high viewer ratings on IMDB, so we’ve started watching it.
I have to say, I’m missing Pablo, a complex human with many facets to his nature, many of them despicable but some very endearing.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Fall, so, I am so glad you are/were watching it Bixa. I believe I have watched it twice over a period of time. I keep seeing Harlots being offered and had been wondering about it. Thanks for the heads up Lugg. I knew it was just a matter of time but yes, there is now a series Love In The Time of Corona available for streaming.

The Fall was indeed excellent. Such a shame that Jamie Dornan went on to make those dreadful Shades of Grey movies.

The new and final (#8) season of Engrenages (Spiral) has begun and it is as gripping as ever. I've noticed that some of the episodes have an age 10 rating and others have age 12, but I certainly cannot figure out how they make the distinction. In the episode I'm watching now, the narc squad busted a seedy hotel linked to South American drug mules and they nearly puked when they entered the room where the drug lords extracted the drug balls from the anus of the mules. It looked like the whole bathroom had been hosed down with shit. If they had shown more than a few seconds of it, I would have been ready to puke, too. And this episode was rated age 10.
I'm wondering which of the main characters will die at the end, since it seems inevitable.

just finished watching that Season 3 of Narcos. Yes, enjoyable but I know what you mean about missing Pablo. The ending clearly set up a future season of Narcos as the Mexican cartel was taken on. Mr. Kimby did some research and it’s called NARCOS: MEXICO, and there have been 2 seasons of 10 episodes each through February 2020. Entirely new cast, so we’ll be missing agent Pena as well as Pablo and agent Murphy, but it got good ratings, so we’re looking forward to it becoming available through our new and soon to open library. www.imdb.com/title/tt8714904/

The 3 part series Des on BBC2.
The story of Dennis Nilsen, our serial killer from the the ‘80’s mainly about his arrest and trial. No gory bits at all but he was played by David Tennent who was wonderfully creepy. Quite brilliant. Nilsen may have killed as many as 15 men and boys but was convicted of 6 of them.
He kept the bodies under the floorboards before dismembering them and either burning of flushing the parts down the toilet. He was caught when all the bits finally jammed up the pipes.

Another good crime solving series on Masterpiece on PBS, called Van Der Valk, set in Amsterdam. Three episodes, but each stands alone. There will be three more next year. www.imdb.com/title/tt9128874/

Tonight I watched episode two of Season Four of Outlander. Boy, do those people have a bunch of adventures! In part of episode one of this season they were floating down the river in a flat boat. I found myself praying that it would be a peaceful interlude, just to give my nerves a rest. There is only one more season available after this one. What will I do?

Been watching re-runs of The Carol Burnett Show. Going back in TV comedy really shows up the deliberate slapstick comedy that made the series so watchable.

Been watching re-runs of The Carol Burnett Show. Going back in TV comedy really shows up the deliberate slapstick comedy that made the series so watchable. Carol Burnett show was one of the all-time great variety shows. Another more political show worth re-watching is The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. And if you can find Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In, watch it for a taste of how open-minded, irreverent and politically incorrect America once was....

Cheery & Htmb ~ ditto on missing Sandy. As for why she was replaced, I believe she left the show on her own volition. I say that because I've seen articles (which I didn't read) indicating that.
Were it up to me, there would be no silly "comic relief" presenters on that show. They add nothing and quite often you can tell the contestants want to smack them for being distracting and getting in the way.

Looking forward to catching up with GBBO. I am now just one episode away from completing series 2 of the Harlots and it has just got better and better. I cannot find a date for when Series 3 will be aired on BBC 2 so will have to wait some time I suspect. Thanks for the heads up about Des and Ghosts, Mick and Cheery . A few of my friends are raving about Ratched airing on Netflix - I am not sure its my thing but thought I would post this link it case it appeals ? The main character is the nurse from One Flew Over A Cuckoos Nest of course. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2020/sep/18/ratched-review-gothically-grandiose-fun-ryan-murphy-netflix

So glad you enjoyed Harlots, Lugg. Besides everything else wonderful, entertaining, illuminating, etc. about it, the acting is stellar.
I am very much on the fence about Ratched. Also, I have never watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, although I did read the book sometime back in the '70s.
