watched a couple episodes of The Morning Show You gave a really good précis of the show, Kimby. Even though there are some missteps in the overall development of the plot, I think it's an important treatment of the issue, especially in showing the gray area in many of the me-too accusations. I'd be curious to know your ultimate feelings toward Steve Carell's character and toward his accuser. (which probably need to be put in a Spoiler)

Recent Faves: The Queen's Gambit, limited series - Netflix So many friends have recommended this to me, at first glance it does not have a great appeal but the reviews are generally very good. So ...I have this lined up for the holiday period . I am still watching and really enjoying This is Us Season 1 - it has umpteen episodes but I think that by No 16 I must be near to the end of this first series. It fills me with absolute pleasure knowing that there are 5 series in total ( and maybe more to come) . Yes sometimes it is overly saccharin sweet in that US series kind of way, but then a twist of plot or even a single comment redeems it. Anyway it provides me with just the right amount of escapism , emphasising the innate good in people that I need right now

On an airplane last week, I watched a couple episodes of The Morning Show, starring Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carroll. I liked it. This series gets even better as it goes on. You will be impressed with Aniston. She's extremely good in this series and I always knew she had the dramatic talent, she just never got much opportunity (watch a movie called The Good Girl for a hint though). The series gets more serious and if it's at all based on Lauer, then you will loathe him by the end. FWIW, Lauer's wretched character and behavior were an open secret for YEARS.

I watched one of the episodes of Black Mirror a couple of nights ago. K2 mentioned this series a while back but I don't think there has been much discussion about it. www.imdb.com/title/tt2085059/ Both my children are long time fans, but the couple of episodes I have watched have not really done it for me. Anyway, my daughter chose one episode that she thought I would enjoy and I did very much ... "San Junipero" I shall now watch more episodes - the great thing is that you can dip in and out, as the episodes are all stand alone.

Thanks for that recommendation of a single episode of Black Mirror, Lugg. I gave up on the series after one & a half episodes, but will dip back in based on what you say. Last night I watched the last available episode of The Last Kingdom. There are currently four seasons, with a fifth in the works. There are fans of Bernard Cornwell's books here on anyport who should look out for this series. I absolutely love it, and would even go so far as to say that taken as a whole, it outstrips even GoT and Vikings for me.

To fill the hole in my heart left by the lag between seasons of The Last Kingdom, I have started watching Les Misérables. This is not, God be praised, a musical, but a BBC six-part series from 2018. It's a shame I'm not still in school, because then I could fake knowing the book, which in fact I've never read. That means that the suspense is still suspenseful for me, although the trailer is rife with spoilers. The series has big names who all turn in wonderful performances, even though some parts are painted with bold strokes -- the bad are very, very bad and the good just about saintly. I'm only two episodes in so far, but am committed to the show. Side note ~ I noticed during the credits that some of the production names were decidedly not French nor English. Also, part of the credits say "supported by Screen Brussels and Screen Flanders" & that thanks was rendered to the city of Sedan. This required further investigation which turned out to be pretty interesting: www.thelocationguide.com/2019/01/bbcs-les-miserables-doubled-belgium-for-19th-century-france/Anyway, here is the trailer:

Factoid: Lots of French movies are filmed in Belgium, too, for tax reasons, the same way so many American movies are filmed in Canada.

Yes, I know that, but always watch the credits because I like to see where shows are filmed. I enjoyed finding out that the ninth century England of The Last Kingdom was created in Hungary.

Street scenes of wartime Paris are generally filmed in Budapest or Prague, sometimes in Bucharest.

I'm afraid I really hated the Doctor Who. The cast were insipid and the plot a rehash of previous stories. Even Captain Jack couldn't save it for me. I've been giving the writers and Jodie the benefit of the doubt, waiting for them to settle into their stride..but neither the actor nor the writers have managed to impress imo.

I've only seen maybe two and a half episodes with the female Doctor since I just happen on to it by accident, but I'm sorry, she is totally inappropriate. The female Doctor always seems to be holding back and often allowing the men to lead. For Chrissake, the Doctor is more than 900 years old and has generally been quite self-assured even in the most bizarre circumstances. Not anymore. I would have hoped that she would be just as foolhardy and brave as the male Doctors. Wasn't the whole point of this change to promote gender equality? Big fail in my opinion.

Agreed. When Jo Martin made a brief appearance in an episode I thought 'yes!' She was proper 'Doctor confident' that's how to do it.

There are rumours flying around the internet that Jodie is leaving Doctor Who. It's probably for the best, the public haven't really taken to her.

I guess this is proof of how pathetic I am, but for the time being the only tv series that interest me are historical dramas. Anyway, knowing that I'm approaching the end of Les Misérables, I hastened to find something to take its place, which is how I wound up watching the first episode of Bridgerton. Since I didn't know until just now (looking up trailer to post here) that the show is based on a series of romance novels, I was happy to take in the candy colors and tongue-in-cheek tone of the presentation. The only quibble I have is that almost all of the women who are older than debutantes are made up in such a way as to make them look too modern. Well, also, the events take place in my absolute least favorite period of women's fashion. www.townandcountrymag.com/leisure/arts-and-culture/a22518910/julia-quinn-bridgerton-netflix-series/

The link for Bridgerton does not work for me Bixa ...but it is probably my ancient browser. But I did a search and it looks like a good way to pass my lockdown hours. New series of Staged started on Monday on BBC 1. Fab. I will try it again , I quite enjoyed the first few episodes but then its appeal dwindled. But my heart lightens at reading that Michael Palin is in this new series albeit only episode 1

Re: Staged ~ you all have waaaay more patience than I, since I didn't even make it all the way through the trailer. Finished Les Misérables tonight & must recommend it highly. The last two episodes really ramp up the excitement as that is when the revolution is brought in. The production does an excellent job of showing the people on a barricade and the attacking forces. It's only after it's all over that the viewer appreciates how much breadth of action was portrayed in a tiny space. The viewer also appreciates over and over again throughout the series the sheer beauty of the cinematography, with so many scenes having a painterly quality. My respect for Dominic West's acting now knows no bounds. I'm always a little reluctant going into a period piece, knowing that the sentimental aspects might be too cloying for our modern tastes. But West handles even the OTT moments beautifully, making them seem quite natural. Watching David Oyelowo is somewhat frustrating. He is an excellent actor, but the role calls for him to be mostly tightly buttoned up and rigidly controlled. But when he is finally able to break free of that straightjacket, he is astounding. Both West and Oyelowo make their characters believable and moving. On a more negative note, Josh O'Connor turns in exactly the same performance he burdened us with in his portrayal of Prince Charles -- the sensitive suffering and the annoying hunched posture. His Wikipedia entry bulges with good roles and stellar awards. What am I not seeing? There are six one-hour episodes serving up what ultimately seems like far more drama and entertainment than would fit into six hours.

I love Staged..my attention span is quite short atm so the format suits me. David and Georgia Tennant, Michael Sheen and his partner Anna keep me entertained and wanting more. Nothing much happens but real life is so scary atm I find it quite cathartic.
Watching the latest series of Star Trek Discovery not enjoying it as much as the last series.

... so I continue to enjoy This Is Us and I am now watching through Season 2 - still laughing , crying and grimacing, in probably equal measures. I am not sure why I enjoy it so much because really I should not. Maybe it is the impact of lockdown ? But it really does dig deep into my feelings about so many things and the twists continue to keep me on side. I watched x 2 episodes of the first series of The Last Kingdom and really enjoyed it ...so thank you Bixa. I watched it with Em who is much more into this type of series than I am and she enjoyed it too but said the cinematography falls short of that in The Vikings. Not sure what others think re that I listened to an interview today with one of the actors from Bridgerton and I think it sounds fun so that is now on my list.

It is tons of fun & you get caught up in the plot, such as it is. Also, in case you don't know how to do sex, you can learn how from this show.
