GBBO delivers all over again! I am now watching season two of The Morning Show. As far as I know, Kimby was the only other anyporter who watched it last season. Episode one just drops you right back in the show, arrogantly assuming that you remember everything that happened two years ago. I will keep watching, even though there are many flaws. This article (contains spoilers, if you care) sums up how I feel about the show: www.npr.org/2021/09/17/1037337590/the-morning-show-recap-season-2-episode-1-my-least-favorite-year

On some airplanes there are so many viewing options. I took advantage of this to sample Mare of Easttown. I agree that it starts slowly but grabs you pretty soon. You gotta hand it to an actress who is willing to inhabit a role that really isn’t very flattering, and do it as well as Kate Winslet does.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "inhabit a role that isn't very flattering". I watched it and thought it was excellent in every way. Kate Winslet is such a fine actress. I don't think there is a movie that she has done that left me disappointed.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "inhabit a role that isn't very flattering". I can't speak definitively for Kimby, but I took that phrase as being praise for Kate Winslet as a consummate actress. She let herself be shown as frumpy and as a difficult personality in order to fully portray her character, something she achieved magnificently.

Exactly what I meant bixa. Sorta like the role Charlize Theron played a while back. The movie had a one word title, I think. (Scurries off to IMDb to check.) It was Monster. www.imdb.com/title/tt0340855/. For which Ms. Theron won a Best Actress Oscar in 2004.

I've been watching the Canal+/Netflix series On the Verge. It is a pale takeoff of Curb Your Enthusiasm but it has its moments, particularly the feminine point of view by Julie Delpy.

We are watching LUCIFER.
The plot is that Lucifer is tired with guarding hell, so he takes a break and goes to earth.
There he drinks, has sex (no scenes) takes drugs (only in saying) and solves cases with a cop and cases that concerns himself.
He keeps complaining about the way his father treats him, sees a psy, his bro is looking for him, than his mother comes, etc.
Totally unpolitically correct, but quite fun.
Ah, there is a demon too. The actress is superb.

Not a Biblical scholar, but wouldn't Lucifer's father be God/Yaweh/Jehovah/etc.?

Yes indeed ! Lucifer feels belittled and not loved.

We have been watching GUILT on PBS Masterpiece. It’s a 4-part miniseries and pretty good, though sometimes hard to keep up with all the layers and time shifting. Less than 1 hour left for them to wrap it all up. www.imdb.com/title/tt9644058/

We’ve started watching Boardwalk Empire which bixa has recommended. So far so good. It feels like The Sopranos set in Prohibition.

Just watched Salisbury Poisoning. What an awful event to live through for the public. Truly amazing that only one person died. Next up is Kin.

I have heard so much about admirers of Boardwalk Empire on here I am just going to have to take the plunge. (I never got into The Sopranos so, I'm not sure if I will like it)

Did you like The Wire, casimira? For many of these shows you don’t have to “like” the characters to appreciate the storylines, performances and overall look of the production.

The one thing I would say about Boardwalk Empire as a sort of warning is how disconcerting the full frontal nudity scenes are at the very beginning. They seem to be there as pointless shock value and initially made me doubt the overall integrity of the show as a drama. Rest assured that it hits its stride after (what I consider) those first false steps and becomes completely enthralling.
Steve Buscemi always brilliantly makes any role he plays completely three dimensional, but I also fell in love with Shea Wiggan as an actor in this series. Kelly Macdonald and Gretchen Mol bring the main women's roles wonderfully to life. A super fun aspect for the series for me was the depiction of the famous gangsters, particularly Michael Stuhlbarg as Arnold Rothstein.
I recently watched episode three of the second season of The Morning Show and the amount I did not care is immense. That's it for me.

I have tried 2 or 3 times to engage with The Wire and, there is something about it, I think it's the main character's voice that puts me off. That, and it's close resemblance to Homicide: Life On The Streets, both set in Baltimore, may be the other reason. We had a long discussion on this topic of one versus the other some years ago on here. If I remember correctly, The Wire won out as the favored of the two. I guess it's time to give it another go.

SUCCESSION is beginning a third season on HBO. Though we’ll wait till it’s available from the library, we can hardly wait. I’ve heard KILLING EVE has it’s final season now or soon as well.

Just finished the 5th season of Schitt$ Creek, about to begin the 6th and final season. Though the character portrayals are way over the top, we’ve grown to love them.
The 1/2 hour episodes each stand independently of each other (much like Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.). Though there is a plot framework, it isn’t critical to enjoying an episode on its own merit.

Emile Zola's Germinal has been brought to the screen a few times already. The last time was with Claude Berri's feature film starring Gérard Depardieu. Now there is a new mini series about this coal mining drama, just as relevant as it ever was. I expect it will show up on English language services before long.

All done with Schitt’s Creek. Forever. So sad to be losing these characters, we came to love them all, some more grudgingly than others.
The 6th and final season concludes with a lot of loose ends wrapped up in (mostly) satisfying ways, except for one rather improbable situation (“It’s a TV show!” says Mr. Kimby).
There were lots of extras on the DVD, so we got to see the cast members interacting as themselves, not their characters, and it was amazing to see how different they actually were from their characters. But it was obvious that the long-running show was a rewarding experience for the cast (as well as the audience).
Dan Levy was the brains behind the series, and it was a family affair as his Dad Eugene Levy starred, and Dan and his sister Sarah both played major characters. Catherine O’Hara who played Moira had also starred with Eugene Levy in some of his earlier Christopher Guest mockumentaries, like A Mighty Wind and Best in Show.
Not sure what’s gonna take Schitt’s Creek’s place…

I have watched two episodes of McDonald and Dodds so far, and it is winning me over. McDonald is a detective sent from London to Bath against her will and Dodds is an apparently doddering older detective who gets paired with her before being put out to pasture. She is too modern for him and he is much too old school for her. So you can imagine that his old fashioned ways are what solves the crimes.
As usual, I really appreciate that there are no gunfights or chases in these slow and civilised investigations. That doesn't stop people from dying, of course.
