When I find lists like this I tend to save them. That's not because I necessarily believe in the "best" of the headline, but because it's handy to have précis & capsule reviews of several shows bundled together ~ www.vogue.com/article/best-tv-shows-of-2021

That's not because I necessarily believe in the "best" of the headline, but because it's handy to have précis & capsule reviews of several shows bundled together ~ I do too and for the same reasons but I had not seen that list so thanks Bixa. I have lots to watch at the moment - final series of Dr Who with Jodie as the Doctor has just started, Angela Black is keeping me entertained and my new favourite " The Outlaws" really such a great series so far. Finished the final episode of the final season of Shameless. Though we felt it dragged a bit in the first few episodes, it redeemed itself with the last few, including a finale that was quite rewarding despite not solving everyone’s problems.
Bill Macy was outstanding in his despicable-ness. And the rest of the crew was also really good. There were a few flashbacks using footage from over the past 11 seasons, of the actors much younger, and of Fiona who departed after season 9, I think. Very satisfied.
Except, what’s next?

I know that the versions of Shameless are completely different between the UK and the US, but I only watched the UK version. Fiona left after series 2 in the UK version to live in Amsterdam but she did return for the very last episode in series 11. (Her partner/husband was James McAvoy before he became famous.)

Well I finished the Irish crime drama 'Kin'. Overall I had misgivings about the series. It had a stellar cast but was a little heavy handed at times. The ending was a total ripoff of the Godfather. Then I moved onto the Danish 'Chestnut Man'. I liked that alot. Still hunting for Das Boot season 2 - apparently not available in the US.

I think I posted a while back that I had started watching The Outlaws ? It is so very good ...really recommend it to those who can view it. Otherwise I am delighted that Masterchef has returned to UK TV - this current series is a professional series, folloows the usual formula with the wonderful Monica Galetti, Marcus Waring and Greg Wallace as the judges.

The first international adaptation of Dix pour Cent / Call My Agent has hit the small screen, and it is Call My Agent Bollywood. I find the trailer all the more intriguing without subtitles than if it had them...

Having LOVED The Expanse streamed on Amazon Prime I was desperate to share it with my beloveds. I knew that they'd enjoy it but wouldn't want to watch it on a piddly little tablet (as I had) sooooo...I sent for series 1, 2 & 3 on DVD and we watched it together...they loved it too YAY! Initially I think that they were humouring me..but they soon got into it. Made me ridiculously happy.
Unfortunately I can't get series 4 & 5 on DVD yet..they are out on Blue Ray but we don't have a Blue Ray player.

The book The Name of the Rose just tired me out and made me glad when it was over. Thanks for the review of the series, which sounds equally exhausting.
As you all know, I am a raving intellectual. This is proved by the fact that I'm gobbling up "Dickinson" (about a poet -- culture!) and "The Great" (history -- always important!).
This is season 3 for Dickinson & I have to admit the various episodes are now often dragging a bit in the sense that they'll belabor a particular bit in a way that seems lazily designed to fill the time frame. But the appeal of seeing Emily Dickinson as a modern teen, albeit in 19th century dress, does not wear thin, nor does the (okay, rather distant) exposure to the actual time period.
The Great is on season 2, which I think I'm enjoying even more than season 1, which was a killer (in more ways than one) chunk of entertainment. The two stars, Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, are beyond good and believable no matter how farcical the proceedings get, which can be pretty farcical and manic indeed. They are helped by a stellar supporting cast, all of whom are consummately professional and believable. The beauty of the conceit at the heart of The Great is that you don't care how much is historically true or not, you simply believe in what is happening as you watch. With all of those riches, you also get fabulous sets and costumes and lots of laughs.

We have been trying to watch several series (french) that were released on tv. I fear that we are back in a time where the French make series that are dark. Dark characters, scenes filed in the dark, no humour, speeches badly articulated... So we watch a lot of first episodes. My wife sticks longer than i do, so i grab a book and don't watch anymore. She says i have no patience.

Just a comment on The Name of the Rose. I just couldn't read it to the end -- it was a terrible slog, so when the movie came out I went to see it. The end made me say, "What?! That's the big deal?", so I got rid of the book and have never attempted anything else by Umberto Eco.

That book was my poolside read one late winter in Arizona at my mother's house a couple of decades ago. I quite enjoyed it. As is standard for me, never went to the cinema version.

Fumo, I rarely go to see movies from books I liked because they are usually a disappointment. But I wondered if the movie was any better than the book and how it ended.

Currently watching Bordertown. Love the 'kick ass' Russian cop Lena. I hear Furia is really good but not yet available in the US.

I'm watching season three of Hanna (thank you, Amazon Prime!). Even though I have never liked spy/espionage type shows, I remain committed to this series, in large part because of the the compelling women leads. Ray Liotta is in this season and damn is he menacing!

Watched the final episode of season three of Hanna last night -- so much killing! Lots of guns, lots of splattering blood. Today I was wondering how it was that I was able to not only see the series as entertainment, but also to be so into it.
Then I discovered that my stooooopid credit card company had once again screwed up in exactly the same way they have screwed up in the past. Bring on the guns! Bring on the blood splatters!

Considering how extreme some of the movies that I see are, it is interesting that I do not watch any violent series on television. I also do not watch any series that concern government operations or most organised crime. I think it's because I am willing to put up with just about anything outside my home but where I live is my safe haven.

We watched the first episode of The Expanse series 6 on Friday....hhmmmmmmm..... It's out again is it? I'll have to watch it. I notice there is also something called The Expanse: One Ship (2021) "The Expanse: One Ship is a series of webisodes released alongside the sixth season. The episodes are available in the X-Ray bonus content section via Prime Video."

Not finding anything we’re looking for at the library, I brought home the fifth and final season of The Affair. It’s been so long since we watched season 4, we’d forgotten that one major character was killed off, and another had remarried (or so we thought). The protagonist is still struggling with the same issues. Life goes on.

Planning to watch Around the World in 80 Days tonight with David Tennant as Phileas Fogg (Franco-German-Italian coproduction filmed in Romania). Early reviews are not outstanding, but it seems like perfect holiday season fodder.

A few years ago I posted some information about the TV series " Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" . Phryne Fisher returns to Melbourne in 1920s from Europe where she had become an "Honourable".
The attention paid to the detail of the post WW1 city maintaining all the customs of England but having a rough but healthy growth of local ideas is shown up with Phryne's "go to" pair of WW1 mates.
The thing that sells it is the clothing she wears. From Charleston to top elegant State functions the costumes are stunning. After the 2nd series a selection of the wardrobe dept toured the Eastern States and encouraged designers.
I found the other day the google site and started to watch again. The series is on again from the beginning on NETFLIX

Yes, this is a favourite of Mrs Cactus.
She also likes Murdoch Mysteries based in Toronto at the end of the 19th century.

We’ve just watched the first three episodes of DEFENDING JACOB. Has anyone else seen it? It seems very good. An 8th grade boy is accused of killing a classmate by stabbing him and leaving him to die in a wooded park. The accused is the son of an Assistant District Attorney, played by Chris Evans, who is investigating the case until his son is arrested. The boy’s mother is played by Michelle Dockery, minus her British accent. All the acting is convincing and we’re hooked. This is a “limited series” of 8 episodes. www.imdb.com/title/tt2304589/

Normally we get Death in Paradise at least 4-6 months after the UK, but we are getting the (first ever) Christmas episode next week. I despise Christmas episodes of any series.
