The other show I'm watching is Reservation Dogs. I'm only two episodes in, but already care about the characters and such plot as there is. The humor in it is good, but there is also a deep undercurrent of sadness to the whole thing.

I was quite pleased by the Death in Paradise Christmas special. It was better plotted and more interesting than most episodes but I suspect that it is because it was a 90 minute episode instead of the usual 52 minutes where everything has to be wrapped up at top speed.

We are having trouble getting - from the library - recent seasons of all the series we’ve started watching, so branched out and tried some new-to-us series. BONES didn’t do it for us, but we got kind of hooked on BETTER THINGS, and watched the whole first season. It’s structured kind of like Curb your Enthusiasm, and follows a single mom of three daughters who works as an actress in LA. It’s raw and raunchy and endearing and funny. Not bad for a fill-in series. It has a 5th season airing this February. www.imdb.com/title/tt4370596/

Something for any nostalgics of a certain age in the UK: TalkingPictures TV is about to start showing the 1960s Maigret series, starring Rupert Davies and that iconic opening: My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

Just started watching Domina on Amazon Prime. It's all about would be Empress Livia. I was a big fan of I Claudius back in the day so I have a little background. It's well done and so far I'm enjoying it.

That looks excellent, but I'll have to wait. The BBC player doesn't work out of the country for us legal people.

Has this spoilt it for us? I'm talking about the series Death In Paradise starring who we call "Nick" from My Family series. Since his brilliant part in that series we just cannot get to grips with visualising him as anyone but Nick. Has this happened to anyone with another TV series perhaps....like seeing Mr.Bean in every episode of Maigret?
Second question: Directed at Kerouac as he sees more Movies and TV than all of us put together.....maybe. Kerouac. I have just been reading and listening to the crit on "Emily In Paris" I thought I may watch it but now not so sure. It got just the most dreadful reviews about all sorts of things wrong with the perception of French /Parisienne people down to making Americans look as if they are above anyone else in intelligence and get-go. I really want to know what you think. And of course it has to be said, it's only a movie.

Kris Marshall already moved on a couple of seasons ago. The current inspector is Ralf Little whom I used to see in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps although he has been in a number of other series since then.

In between, the detective in DiP was played by Ardal O'Hanlon, who I felt couldn't quite shake off "Father Dougal". It's odd how some actors can escape the part that made them famous, and be celebrated for their versatility (IIRC Kris Marshall also played a sinister and unbending NKVD officer in the TV series of Dr Zhivago), and some can't. (I thought Rowan Atkinson made a very convincing Maigret, actually).

Thanks for the response both of you. Yes Patrick you are right about Rowan Atkinson - my husband thinks he acts the part very well. As for Emily in Paris. There are far more interesting takes on Paris than some made up rubbish. I think it would be a waste of a lovely evening to view what most crits are talking about. I had a feeling you would not be bothered either Kerouac.

I have seen on the travel forums that a lot of people hate Emily in Paris but they watch it anyway just to see scenes of Paris -- even more now when so many people cannot travel. Obviously, I do not need to see Paris in a series. I do enjoy recognising places in French series and movies and was rather amazed at how many scenes were filmed on my street last year. In the previous year, every movie seemed to have one or more scenes in the Buttes Chaumont. I see film crews in my neighbourhood quite often (since they take up so many parking spaces with their trucks and set up those huge lights) but I almost never catch them shooting a scene since everybody knows that there are about two hours of waiting around for 3 minutes of action.
When filming is planned, there are notices posted all along the street to warn people of possible disruptions (and ask forgiveness) and also to tell people to steer clear of the area if they have any reason not to want to be accidentally caught on screen because if they are, it is legally assumed that they gave their consent.

I almost never watched Dexter because I thought it was disgusting. But now that he is working with his teenage son in Dexter New Blood, I think it is delightful. There is something wrong with me.

I've been trying to watch Marple, as I love the old country scenes besides the twists and turns in the stories. But, I find some of the plots too complicated for my old brain and then I loose interest and nod off. Thats ok I suppose because when I switch on again some days later the story picks up where I stopped it. I can then be satisfied that I know "Who done it!"

Quoting myself to say that I finished watching the first season of each of those shows & can unreservedly recommend them to others. I'm now watching season two of two other shows, which are polar opposites of each other. One is All Creatures Great and Small, which is old-fashioned, wholesome, and quite engaging. The other is The Witcher, which has monsters and magic, fabulous sets, and remarkably good character development in the three main characters. Thanks to Cheery, I was alerted to season three of After Life, which continues to be funny, moving, and brilliantly acted.

I wathed the mini series The Rope. It looks like it was filmed on a shoestring. It ended as all such fantasies must end.

I am of course thrilled, although hate that thing of dividing a season into two parts. Ozark is really fabulous tv!
Just started watching this show (two episodes so far) & was pulled in immediately. Brilliant stuff!

OH is watching Around The World in 80 Days on the beeb but for some reason I've lost interest. Just started watching Stay Close on Netflix which seems to be the sort of thing that the beeb would make. My attention did wander when a young woman was subjected to gruesome torture..albeit briefly. OH thinks it's a great series.
Watched Afterlife season 3. The first episode was just like putting on a comfortable cardigan..not much happened..but the other 5 episodes sent us on a helter skelter of emotions..even Jeff (who is...admitedly..a pussycat) was crying. It is beautifully written! irreverent, crude and tragic...but also incredibly moving, insightful and kind.

Forgive a TV starved person who has been unable to watch the dozens of "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire" programs since around 2016. I adore the Kids section where 12 & 14 yr olds are super brainy.

On this date in 1977, Alex Haley’s ROOTS began airing on ABC in the US. This is the first “mini-series” that I was aware of, and Americans were rooted to their TVs.

There were several TV series that aired on PBS prior to "Roots"." I Claudius" is the one that comes to mind (1976). "Upstairs Downstairs first aired in 1971.

Yes, Europe did mini-series long before the United States started. When I was living with my grandparents in 1964-1965, we watched Belphégor (The Phantom of the Louvre) and we were all transfixed by it. Many years later, there was a movie with Sophie Marceau and it was crap.
Here are all 4 hours and 41 minutes of the original Belphégor with Juliette Greco! I find the visuals mesmerizing, even if you don't understand the dialogue.
