Had to look up The Bureau & it seems to be available on Amazon Prime in the US, at least.
I dragged out watching After Life because I didn't want it to end. I echo everything Cheery said in Reply #1438.
Haven't started Ozark yet, although I'm not sure why. Maybe not in the mood for something that intense at the moment.
Last night I watched the first episode of The Gilded Age. Those who know me know that this sort of thing is as meat & drink to me & of course I'll keep watching, but ..............
There is something not quite clicking & oddly, it has to do with the acting. No surprise, Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon are superb, as is Audra McDonald in the brief screen time she's had so far. The two ingenues are also likeable and believable. All those actors have managed to rise above what I see as the awkward pacing of all the dialogue. Was there no director? Much of the dialogue comes off as stilted and the delivery has that lack of natural snap & flow, meaning it often sounds like the rehearsal of a stage play. This of course does nothing to promote willing suspension of disbelief. The clunky reciting of lines is most noticeable in the Russell household (the parvenus). And that is most dismaying because the matriarch of that house is Carrie Coon, whom I quite like as an actress and was really looking forward to seeing her in this drama. Her husband is played by Morgan Spector, who was very good in Boardwalk Empire. Not only does this couple come across as actors saying lines, but it seems to have infected everyone in that pretend household.
The sets and costumes are wonderful. This is not an era of clothing that I like much, but the fabrics & colors and sheer workmanship are fabulous. Carrie Coon has had all the best clothes so far, as befits her status as the richest in the land.
Oh well, hope the dialogue problem smooths out as the show goes on.

Today I received wonderful news!.....VERA is coming to Britbox in Season 11 on 3rd Feb. Fans hailed the first two episodes as 'the best ever' and the remaining four episodes in the season are likely to follow suit.

I also love reading the short account of what Kerouac thinks of a movie even though I most likely will never watch it. I'm a more short movie watcher. Like Vera in her series and a lot of other detective series. Don't laugh but last night we were flipping through YouTube channels and the entire series of The Saint popped up starring Roger Moore. My goodness what a handsome devil he was in his youth! All black and white for the first couple of movies but somehow it never threw us off and 45min later we had watched the whole (badly acted in those days by most of the cast) film. Maybe that's a cruel thing to say but when a non-movie goer like me thinks its not too great, I think I might be right! This is what we watched:

I would watch it if they don't cut out the bits with the beautiful Volvo P 1800 doing its stuff.

Thanks for that review, Lugg. I just quickly scanned the link, keeping one eye closed because I feared it would give away too much. Erin Doherty was so good in The Crown that I had to go find a picture of the real Princess Anne because I couldn't remember what she looked like after watching Erin.
Will absolutely watch Chloe!

I read about Chloe too - can't wait until we get to see it in the US. I am still deep into 'Bureau'.

I have finished watching Normal People and really enjoyed the emotional roller coaster for the most part. I am now about 3 into Series 1 of Afterlife, finding it a bit "Officey" at the moment but going to stick with it. They finally started showing Normal People on a normal (free) channel here, and it is brilliant. It is also refreshing to see an Irish series instead of the usual British stuff, even if a lot of the British stuff is great.

The new season of Balthazar, a legist, restarted on french TV. We love it.

Balthazar isn't bad and I'll try to catch in on replay. Tonight I'll be watching Alex Hugo, the French rural mountain cop. He went to the mountains to get a peaceful life from the big city, and he spends a lot of time hiking in fantastic settings. But you'd be amazed how many people get murdered, kidnapped or threatened in these peaceful areas, not to mention the runaways, mentally disturbed, etc. Almost as many as in Midsomer or Grantchester.
It is refreshing after all of the "city" crime shows.

Alex Hugo is a series we watch with pleasure. The actor was interviewed about his autistic daughter and said marvelous things about her, coming from the heart of a father.

I've started watching season 2 of Euphoria, and I'm not sure it can get much sleazier. Zendaya risks becoming the biggest star of her generation for being able to juggle this at the same time as Spider-Man and Dune.

I recently watched Inventing Anna, a mini-series on Netflix that stars Julia Garner (from Ozark). Such a talent. She portrays a con artist who woos and wins over NY society, Wall Street et al until... Brilliant!

I've been wondering about that show, especially since I think Julia Garner is so immensely talented. Will try to catch it. One show everyone can miss is Hotel Portofino. Even though some of the actors are good, overall my feeling was indifference. About a quarter of a way into episode three or four, I just gave up. Naturally I am sticking with The Gilded Age. It's a little sluggish, but the history is interesting & I look forward to each episode. Earlier I mentioned that I'm not crazy about that era of fashion. But good grief, watch episode five if you want to see the ugliest clothes ever. Based on the color & fabric combinations, I can only think the wardrobe department scored the material at a remnant sale. Watched the first half of the final season of Ozark. Brilliant, as always, & I'm dying for the rest of it. Still watching Resident Alien & it's still silly fun. Also getting to the end of what is supposedly the last season of Catastrophe. Finished watching the most recent season of Derry Girls (there will be another!) & it's still one of the funniest shows ever. Last night I realized there was a season of Vienna Blood I had not seen, so opened episode one. It was movie length! I like the strangely slow page of the show, the actors, & the period setting, so I went ahead & watched it. Afterward it felt like filling up on hors d'oeuvre, where you're full yet unsatisfied. Returning or new shows I can't wait to see ~ Raised by Wolves (Feb 3) Vikings: Valhalla (Feb 25) Outlander (March 6) Sanditon (March 20) Bridgerton (March 25) Lotta tv!

Jeff is just watching the last episode of Death in Paradise...it's not for me altho it's inoffensive...I prefer my detectives a bit more edgy.
We binged the latest series of Spaceforce on Netflix this week. Excellent.

Ohmygawwwwwwd ~ why haven't I been watching Space Force? ?!! StoopidstoopidstoooooopidBixa!!! I'd heard of it, but only the name stuck -- I didn't know anything about it. After Cheery's comment above, I figured I'd better find a trailer. Whooooo ~~ I can see why the Cheerys binged it! Thanks, Cheerykins!

.I prefer my detectives a bit more edgy. Oh most definitely for me too. So the choice was Maigret with Michael Jambon in the lead. What I love about YouTube is that it has all the episodes season by season. I also turn to Britbox for episodes of Poirot with David Suchet. Slowly devouring the whole series. I finished off Vera in a flash so have turned my attention to all the stuff I have never seen.

And what I like is the non-edginess. I like a total fantasy world with nice police and nice culprits, even if they hate someone enough to have shot/stabbed/poisoned/drowned them out of jealousy/greed/revenge/heartbreak. I am tired of the sick psychos on the other shows tracked by police detectives with their own serious mental problems. This does not entertain me.

So the choice was Magrait with Michael Jambon in the lead. I don't think Michael Gambon was a bit of a ham 🙂. I enjoyed the few of that series I saw. As it happens, one of our archive channels is showing the BBC Maigret series from the early 60s, with Rupert Davies. It makes an interesting comparison with the Gambon and the more recent Rowan Atkinson versions. It's much brisker in the story-telling and hence the acting (each story wrapped up in an hour). And of course the production values are so different: few if any exterior establishing shots (though what there is obviously Paris rather than Budapest), mostly quite cramped studio sets, and all in b/w, of course. In those days, we only had two channels in the UK, so it was a must-see for a lot of people - and it had that evocative theme tune:

With the new Maigret movie starring Gérard Depardieu released this week, I saw that that newsstands are displaying a number of the Simenon books in ultra cheap editions.

I finished season 2 of Euphoria. As great as Zendaya is, as things stand, I don't want to see a 3rd season. The end of this season just got too weird.

It is an extreme plunge into the teenage world of sex and drugs. Zendaya won the Emmy last year as the best dramatic actress, also the youngest actress ever to win. There is quite a bit of full frontal nudity (but not Zendaya).

I am so lame when it comes to "weird" stuff. I just haven't the patience to watch it. I doubt I could stomach Euphoria.
