In which context? American (super intelligent) or British (super cool)?

One thing that shines through in the miserable clips they give us of the film is the extreme generational distance between older and younger. Older are almost Edwardian; younger in a revolution in dress and manners. I never watched the series (I don't have a television, nor to I sign up to monopolies that don't pay their taxes here).
In any case, it will be pleasant in terms of architecture and landscape pron (typo deliberate).

Watched a new big production made jointly by the BBC and HBO His Dark Materials The first episode set the scene very well. Introduced the viewer to Lyra's Oxford which is in an alternative universe to ours. The Nicole Kidman film version The Golden Compas was awful...glossing over a lot of the story it really didn't do the book justice. I recommend the three books (if you enjoy fantasy fiction) as they are a thumping good read!

I have now watched the first episode of My Brilliant Friend, which is less boring than the book, plus the kid actors are great. There is way too much holding the camera on each child's face which does help to preserve the hallmark tedious pomposity of the book, but I liked listening to the Italian anyway, which is something.
Cheery, I just watched the first episode of His Dark Materials and am completely hooked. I love Ruth Wilson and kind of barf thinking of Nicole Kidman in that role. The girl playing Lyra is absolutely wonderful.

We are watching Season Two of Masters of Sex, the (imagined?) story of the groundbreaking Masters and Johnson medical studies in the physiology and psychology of sexual arousal and gratification. Season One was mostly about the studies themselves, with volunteers hooked up to sensors and cameras performing the act with other volunteers. When the limitations of their study became obvious to them, they volunteered themselves to continue their research with each other as sex partners, documenting their “results” after each “experiment.”
In Season Two, the studies are temporarily on hold as Dr. Masters and Mrs. Johnson explore their “not an affair” in a hotel in a distant city. Their non-affair involves deep conversations and really excellent writing. We’ll keep watching.
On a similar track, we are abandoning The Deuce partway thru season two. Though James Franco does a great job playing two brothers, Maggie Gyllenhal’s role as a budding director of pornographic films with a more female touch has lost its appeal.

Good grief...not watched that Masters of Sex altho I've seen it advertised.
Recently watched a Netflix short series called Unbelievable excellent...2 cops pursuing a serial rapist. Superb performances by the 3 female leads.

My copy ordered on the strength of recs on this site I think you'll be pleased. Basing that on having watched three episodes of My Brilliant Friend so far, and by and large it was all worth it. I'm not a person who wants car chases or for things to race along, but still feel that often the action feels too slowed down in service of godknowswhat, but it does not ruin the show for me. I can't remember how far I got in the one book in the series that I attempted, but don't think I'm at that point in the show yet. In any case, the tv show seems to be better at letting the viewer in on what's going on than the book did. Perhaps that is the reason for the stately pace, so that the various characters and relationships will sink in. Overall the production allows you to empathize with some characters who in their actions are not at all likable, by simply showing their circumstances, i.e., impatient or even brutal parents who know life is an endless cycle of hard work and never having enough, a cycle that means they must push that same cycle onto their children. The casting and acting are excellent throughout.

After watching episode four of MBF, and after my rather positive opinion above on episodes 1--3, I am forced to say that there is a difference between measured pacing and just belaboring a point to death.

I have to laugh because this morning I read the obituary of Maria Perego, who created Topo Gigio. It contained this nugget: ... one day in 1959 a recording by the singer Domenico Modugno was played at fast-forward speed, and Ms. Perego exclaimed, “This is the voice of a little mouse!”Most of what makes me crazy are the looooooooooong lingering shots on the girls' solemn faces. But in the 4th episode, Lila's brother, fed up with the corruption & injustice in the neighborhood, shoots many minutes worth of fireworks at the gangster family while endlessly shrieking "Strunza! Strunza!" At least he used one of the words I know.

Over the last few weeks, I have watched the first six seasons of Engrenages thanks to Patrick's persistent mention of it. My nerves are in a bundle, but tomorrow I'll start watching season 7. So many lies! So many secrets! So much unhappiness!

Incidentally, did I spot the interiors of (or meant to look like) the new Tribunal building you reported on here? I've only seen one episode of season 7 so far and all of the other seasons were in the Palais de Justice on Ile de la Cité. I'm quite sure that the courthouse scenes of season 7 will be in the new Tribunal de Paris, though.

Personally, I have never been able to watch Camping Paradis, although I have nothing against it. For those wondering what it is, it is about a holiday campground with all of the employees and customers interacting for various reasons. Basically, it is a French version of The Love Boat.
I am now up to episode 3 of Engrenages, season 7. I know somebody else here who is watching it, so I will not give away any plot details, but I am almost disappointed at the outset of some of the episodes when the parental warning is presented. When the rating is -12 I know that horrible graphic things will happen, and they are the heart of the show. When the rating is -10 I know that nothing much is in store, although the story moves along. I think the first 3 episodes have been rated -10, but I am not giving up hope.

Whew, I finally finished season 7 and will need time to recover before season 8 which is currently filming. I also read that contrary to rumours, season 8 will not necessarily be the last season, but the decision has not been made yet. It took 14 years to film the first 7 seasons, but production is now faster, so if there is a demand, it will be met.

Yes, I'm keeping up with Guilt (it's got some top-notch actors in it), but I'm still not quite sure if they're going for a Fargo-esque black comedy vibe, which is unsettling.

My beloved is watching The Witcher on Netflix. It's no Game of Thrones pretty dreadful I'm afraid. Tolkeinesque, lots of blood and gore...painful attempts at 'thee and thou' type language and LOTS of tits and bums. At least it'll keep him indoors happy for a few hours...

Speaking of Tolkien, I have been watching my extended box set of The Lord of The Rings. I only watched the movies in the past, but now I am digging into the supplements with all of the explanations. I've only just finished the first movie, but there are more than three hours of supplements (included tons of deleted scenes), so I am enthralled. Every time Peter Jacksons and the others say "we loved this scene but we had to cut it to keep the movie moving along," all I can think is "why did you make these wimpy 3 hour episodes when 5 hours would have been so much better?"
