Sounds too scary for me!
A couple of nights ago I finished the first season of Anne, which I hadn't expected to like. I don't know how it happened, but I never read any of the Anne of Green Gables books, so had no particular expectations going in. I fell under the spell of this show right away, and the casting and acting is wonderful. Anne's delivery might be somewhat too modern at times, but I doubt the target audience will notice and besides, the actress is only 14.
Last night I watched the first episode of Unforgiven, which I felt sure had been reviewed by someone on anyport a good while back, but I can't find it. Anyway, I found it compelling right away & it will definitely be a change of pace from Anne.

Thanks for those leads. We are two episodes into Fargo season 3, and have Broadchurch 3 queued up for next.

Just finished the season 3 DVDs of Better Call Saul. Never have I seen a noir so carefully plotted with building intensity, little violence, no sexism, just developing story that leads perfectly into season 4 which has just begun shooting. As this is a prequel to Breaking Bad it's interesting to get the back stories now of many of the characters that appeared years ago in BB. My husband watched this and loved it. I haven't taken the plunge yet. I tend to give myself quite a few episodes before I ditch a series especially if recommended by someone with like minded tastes. (not like some people I know... I'm still licking my wounds from the Homicide "critiques".)

I've been watching The Brokenwood Mysteries which is currently airing on French TV. It is a series from New Zealand which is a refreshing change from the usual places and situations. Of course, it must be admitted that it is not hugely different from the usual Aussie or British series. But it is so nice not to have all of the violence and firearms of most of the American series.

Great joy ~ Endeavour is back! Yes, episode 1 of season 5 aired tonight & I was glued to it.
I've never seen the Inspector Morse series nor read the books, so I am watching this prequel cold. I feel it's a lucky kind of innocence, since I can always go on to Inspector Morse later.

Coincidence ! We had the first of series 6 last might. And very gory too. I love the pathologist and his throwaway comments.

I prefer Endeavour to Inspector Morse The Colin Dexter books were a thumping good read on cold winter nights in front of the fire too.

Thanks for all the critiques, folks.
With one episode left in FARGO season 3, I have to say the (true) story is so preposterous that I can’t really recommend it. And the Minnesota accents were more overwrought than seasons 1 & 2, which I continue to recommend.
Since each season stands alone, we will hope the best for season 4 (if there is one).

Mick, it's series five. And you're so right about the pathologist. He's one of my favorite characters and sometimes I'm annoyed that Morse doesn't acknowledge DeBryn's cleverness.
Thanks, Cheery! Since I know that Inspector Morse was a long-running & beloved show, I wondered if I was watching the "lesser" show. Also, I appreciate the books recommendation.

Patrick, I don't think it is dubbed. The cast are trained actors and speak English without the flattened vowels etc. Aussies can pick up on the NZ accent quickly when they hear it and this series is only slightly NZ. People in NZ who are well educated and maybe part of the private school set usually have little accent at all. I read that all the English speaking countries are moving closer together with the use and pronunciation of English...adopting Americanisms and dropping local variations. Except for NZ where the research shows they are becoming more localised with Pacific Ocean language and speech being absorbed into general use, rather than English.

I was referring to the version kerouac would be watching in France, where they tend to dub into French rather than subtitle. But in the original version, I can hear quite a few of what I understand to be distinct Kiwi vowels: one time a witness-cum-suspect came out with "Y're the ditictive - so ditict!" I love to watch series with subtitles. When I am lazy I read instead of trying to understand. I used to watch a lot of series on Dutch or Flemish TV where they don't dub but subtitle. So I had the choice of trying to understand what was said in English or to translate from Dutch. Whatever the choice it was a win.

On another note, there are now several TV channels busy mining the back catalogues, and for once "repeats" have their charms (there were quite a few things I didn't really watch when they were first broadcast, and others I'd forgotten). So I'm ploughing through The Onedin Line and A Family At War at the moment - I am becoming my parents. My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

I finally finished watching Broadchurch 3 after going back to watch Broadchurch 2. Broadchurch 3 was excellent. I had seen part of it when it was broadcast here but had missed all of the final parts, so I am always happy to get the DVDs for a very reasonable price. I also love seeing all of the 'making of' extras, the cast and crew interviews and all of the deleted scenes.
For one thing, I can't really say that I watch much British television, so it was a great relief for me to see the interviews with Olivia Colman, who is apparently a big star, with a smiling happy face rather than the one that is constantly on display in Broadchurch. DS Ellie Miller seems to have the weight of the world not on her shoulders but on her mouth.
I know that there are no current plans for a Broadchurch 4, at least not for 10 years or so, but I still think that Rory, I mean Arthur Darville, must be up to something. He is just too pure and earnest.

What did you think of Broadchurch 2? I quit watching it because Charlotte Rampling was giving me the royal pip. Since David Tennant also affects me that way, it was too much for one program.

Frankly, Charlotte Rampling can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. After all, she moved to France not too long after I did . I glommed on to her the moment I saw her in the icky Liliana Cavani movie The Night Porter. Anyway I absolutely loved her interaction with Marianne Jean-Baptiste. David Tennant is another case to consider. He was totally adorable as Doctor Who, so it is hard not to like him in totally different adventures. However, he is so interestingly dour and depressed in Broadchurch that it only increased my admiration for him. And I have to admit that once again, the DVD extra features endeared all of the cast to me when it became so obvious "we were just pretending." People who never get to see those extras are really missing out.

Broadchurch 2 was a sad decline despite Charlotte Rampling (some glaringly obvious legal errors from the outset), but 3 was a huge return to form, some fantastic acting by Julie Hesmondhalgh and Sarah Parish (another actor who can do no wrong for me, usually).
